"Cape Doctor" (usually The Cape Doctor or "die Kaapse dokter" in Afrikaans) is the local name for the strong, persistent and dry south-easterly wind that blows on the South African coast from spring to late summer (September to March in the southern hemisphere). It is known as the Cape Doctor because it has long been held to clear Cape Town of pollution and 'pestilence'.

Although the wind smites a wide area of the sub-continent, it is notorious especially in and around the Cape Peninsula, where it can be unpleasantly strong and irritating. The 'Cape Doctor' is to some extent an obsolescent term; many now simply call it the "South-Easter". An ironic fact is that the meteorological records for Cape Town show that the north-west winds of winter can be far stronger and more destructive than the south-Easter.

Although usually accompanied by fair weather, if the SE wind is accompanied by a cut-off low as occasionally happens in the spring and autumn months, this can cause heavy rains to fall over the Western Cape.[1] This phenomenon is popularly known as a black South-Easter. The Laingsburg flood of 24 and 25 January 1981 is an example of this.

THE BLACK SOUTH EASTER

The Black South-Easter is a much misinterpreted phenomenon. It is refered to as a "BLACK" SE event when the SE wind is blowing, usually rather strongly, and it is raining at the same time. A Black SE usually is caused by a deep low pressure system over the SW Cape both in the upper air and on the surface and a very strong/intense SAH south of the country. The Laingsburg Floods and the Easter of 1994 are prime examples of Black South-easters in Cape Town. The tight pressure gradient between the systems cause the wind and the low pressure systems produce the rain. These Black SE events usually occur during spring and autumn, the months when the incidence of cut-off low pressure systems are high.

Isn't it called the Black South Easter. Happens only a few times a year but is fairly intense when it does. That's what I always thought anyway.

Never heard of that before.

Interesting.

Probably not. I spend most of my time riding alone. Not fast enough to join a group yet.,

Only way to get faster / fitter is to join a group that will extend your abilities a bit.

Seems I am going to be facing the wind on my own on Saturday.

Ag, wat nie dood maak nie, maak groot (of sterker)

I would love to join you, but I've started a training program (in hopes of getting fit by Die Burger). And my ride is supposed to be 2.75 hours LSD, and my LSD is going to be your LVVSD, and I don't think I can submit you to that kind of punishment!
