Considering acquiring a superlite frame and loading it with some good but old components.

Can someone tell me what these bikes are like to ride? pros cons? How much should i pay for the frame?

Aren't they the monocoque Tri/TT bikes.. I would imagine they weigh a lot more than 'superlight' - I've never seen one in real life though

Yeah the superlight was a carbon monocoque frame if I remember correctly. and they bounce around like a pogo stick. Maybe with newer platform technology they might actually work.

Wouldn't mind making one into something obscure, like a fixie or singlespeed. I have seen a fixie Softail (you know the one with the large carbon beam that you sit on - think its related to BMC in someway) and that was pretty interesting

The softride is Kevin's, you'll spot it by the mad detailing on the rear dropouts.

The Trek Y frame was one of the first URT designs, and might be a bit primitive (even though it looks a bit like the Starship Enterprise) and I can imagine it would pogo quite nicely. But I've never ridden one, so I just kinda sucked that out of my thumb. Except the bit about the spaceship.

Big%20smile Have a Y frame sitting in the garage can wait to pogo on it just needs to visit cycle art (90's paint job is a bit out there) yellow one side purple the other Stern%20Smile.

In mint condition they still sell for +/- $2000 on ebay.

I have this Trek Y Superlight 300 gathering dust. Still one good looking bike if you ask me...

what are these bikes like to ride? do they really bob around like everyone says? is this a dumb idea as a cheap option for a first dual suss bike?

I didnt ride the bike much. Probably around 200km. bought it in 2000 and didnt like the idea of cycling (too much hard work...)

Then 4 months back decided I will give it a go again, but bought a hardtail

I have never owned one but knew a few people in the old days who did and none of them complained about bob (perhaps they didnt know any better).

The theory with the URT system was that because the BB is mounted onto the swing arm the suspension stiffens when standing for climbing but remains plush when seated.

Like a few guys have said, in the mid nineties these bike were the stuff of legends. Everyone wanted one so they cant be that bad.

If you are looking at buying one why not take it for a spin first to guage how much it bobs.
