Hi

 

With the fast changing world of lightweight components now- days

What would a good weight be for a fully set up med hardtail?

Ok -

I have been trying the weight weenie tricks on a std KHS

 

I have blinged and added as much carbon ie:

Seatpost carbon and saddle carbon too 

Handle bars and spacers and head set carbon

Carbon steerer / Boxed World cup - reba

KCNC skewers and seat post clamp + Bontrager race lite  fairly decent strong wheels - If I go lighter on wheels - will be too weak

Only rear heavy bit is the Truvativ crank..

Frame med KHS Alite --

this all weighs in at 11.4Kg

So I assume to get it below the 10Kg - I would need to do Carbon hardtail frame..

If you want to save weight on frame material it depends on what brand. The alu scott frames are lighter than allot of carbon brands. Where as if for example you get a carbon scott frame that will be about 300-400g lighter than most other carbon frames. If you stick to the KHS frame the biggest weight will be saved on the fork, wheelset and tires. You can save up to 300g on tires alone (depending on what you run at this moment).

Newby, carbon is not the be all and end all of lightweight parts. You also get scandium that is really light but pricey. And you would need to buy really expensive carbon to be light and strong.

This is where it got tricky..

I wanted to set up a good light and customized =hard tail for no more than 10k.. - Big%20smile

I started with new out the box bike for the frame - warranty ..etc...

Then I stripped her added my spare bits off previous bike and traded for other items I wanted to add ......

I am still approx 1k away from the magic 10k.. and the bike is a dream to ride.. even for me a heavy 98kg .. dude...

But sadly still like me over weight ..

Maybe a set of carbon cranks will bring her closer..

 

I want to keep the frame for a year or two before going full carbon...

By then I too should have shed the extra kilos

mampara is spot on. at the end of the day, carbon is glorified plastic. its not something you want to build an MTf out of. you fall once against a rock and its going to be broken

 

rather look for scandium parts

9.5kg and lower would be a nice enough setup for racing

In who's world? Of course it would be nice but I think its a bit OTT.

getting a HT down to 10-11kg is already  hard and I think below 10kg is  where It becomes more of a obsession a than a performance enhancing upgrade.

you're 98kgs and you're sitting on a carbon post that is extending +-300mm out of a frame. That thing will not last. Stop being a ponce and get stuff that works before getting stuff that is light. Get a Thomson post at about 270gr. Planet-X saddle at 260gr. Ritchey bars and stem. Planet-X spacers. Bolt through seat post clamp. Look Quarts carbon pedals (140gr ea). Rav-X foam grips at 9gr ea.

My bike as I race it weighs ~11kgs, as off the shelf 10.6kgs. I must say I am happy with its race weight, would love it to be sub 10. But to drop that 1 kg is going to cost me close to what I bought the bike for.

 

The difference between my bike (Carbon) and its Alu brother with the exact same components is ~600g.
