Mule Bars

OK, so it seems I'm hoarding Mule Bars this month: 2 from MTB Challenge, got one in my goodie bag at Gravity and then one at the water point.

Decided to eventually give it a try on Sunday (the one I collected at the water point). Forgot my AJ muti at home.

Really awesome stuff. Tasted great and really hit the spot. I'm not fast and it was just what I needed for the next 2 hours on the trail.

Just checked their site and see its all natural good stuff. Once my remaining 3 are up, I will definitely be stocking up.

Heard they are R25 a bar? Not saying thats cheap but considering how expensive fruit and rye bread (my usual road food) has gotten, the Mules are worth the convenience.

Must agree that they really are good. But at R 25-00 per bar not many of us will b having them during end-of-the-month rides.

Comparing apple to pears here but 1 Mule Bar is less than 2 Gels, or 2 Mule Bars = 3 Gels.

But I agree that end of the month salty cracks are a reality. Could always just keep the wrappers and fill them with home-made jungle oats bars to impress others LOL

One of these days I'm going to write the book on budget MTBing, being a skint student taking on the Epic I'm building up a portfolio of serious cost saving alternatives. <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

My favourite tried-and-tested snack on a ride: Home baked bran muffins. Snow Flake does a brilliant pre-mix, just add an egg, milk and oil and for just over half the cost of a mule bar you can make 2 batches of 12 muffins. Woop Woop!!

For those keen to impress their riding buddies with their considerable disposable income, add raisins.

A side note on the Mule Bar: They really push the "natural, free trade" angle, but wonder what the carbon footprint is on those puppies coming in from Europe?

Yeah I'm not into the "Free Trade" who-ha PR stuff myself but I need to be more aware of whats in what I eat. I try and avoid certain things - personal choice.

But chicken I agree on MTBing on a budget: The AJ muti saves me a packet at only R3 a Litre vs R10/R20/R50 for similar products. As mentioned I pack in Rye sandwiches wich is not cheap but works wonders.

Ja, the wonderful word of sports nutrition.. After I also picked up my 5kg's of Maltodextrin of Knersis I got some serious books on the topic just to get a feel for what's the "scientific consensus" and if I'm heading in the general right direction. <?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

The bottom line is you cannot buy performance, and sometimes it gets disgusting and hugely entertaining at the same time seeing people try..

They are quite expensive. Do you think they are that much better than a jungle oats Bar??

My LBS had fast fuel bars on special for R10-00 a bar(they were almost out of date!!), I bought 20, then froze them.

More important to me is availability. I love WHASP but its hard to get and I never get around to ordering online. If I can get Mule Bars by just popping into my LBS then Mule it is.

One thing is the Mule bars are quiet big and thats a bonus. I also stockpile Black Cat bars as I munch them at work for a snack.

Hi Chickenrun,

Yep we ship them in from the UK, we could fly them in for about the same cost but as we are aware of all thins environmental we ship them in sacrificing at least 5 weeks shelflife. I should point out that we have looked at making them in SA but cannot get guaranteed supply of ingredients or get the quality standards that are required.

As you seem to be aware of thins green I should point out that we are changing to a compostable and biodegradable wrapper for all our products!

Yes they are!! Your body is designed to run on food not additives! Heavily processed foods might give similar nutritional values, but the potency of the ingredients is much lower and hence you get less from the product! Something to bear in mind.....race with what you train with...why? The vast majority off sports nutrition products contain additives, these are toxic to your system and the reason you get advised to stick to a product you're used to is because your body builds up a tolerance to the toxins that you put into it. 100% Natural, no toxins, no problems! Ever suffered from the runs and or headaches before/after races/training?
