SPD vs Crank Brothers Candy

I used Candy (Egg beaters) for a while but I ride a lot and the maintenance eventually just cost too much - Bearings and seals every couple of months. I went over to Shimano XTR SPD's and have had no trouble or costs for at least a year and there is still no bearing play - so my advice is if you ride often stick to the SPD.

As LittleBen says 'if you're ever stuck all alone in a forest at least you can have scrambled eggs if you got the Candys' Wink

Been on the normal eggbeater SL's. (Candy just have the extra base around the eggbeater) for about 3 years now, 2 sani2c's on it, and loads of other races and the training involved in that, and have never had any maintenance issue's with them.

The best thing about my Candy's is I get to laugh at the SPD boys when they fall over in the mud because they couldn't unclip.

I've had 1 particular ride that was so muddy and wet it wrecked a fork and a rear d?railleur. The Candy's didn't give me the slightest hassle, not even once.

I ride with the normal egg beaters as well, and have done so for 5 years now I think. I haven't had any problems with them, and haven't done any maintenance on them either. I've just recently replaced the cleats though. I think the cleats on the SPD's last longer.

That said, I have a friend who used the Candy's and he had a few problems with them. He has since moved to normal Egg Beaters, and had no problems with them.

My brother uses the SPD's and he hasn't had problems with them.

I reckon you should see if you can try a set of each out, and get the ones you are most comfortable with, especially if you are going to ride a lot.

In my opinion, having used both for some time, the Crank Brothers pedals are lighter for sure. The candy's also have totally different cleats to SPD and they allow more lateral movement which I like. Clipping in and out were a bit strange to begin with but you get used to it quickly.

In the end I suppose it is down to personal preference and you have to decide for yourself. Get a set from your LBS and try them out for a day or two first.
