Reader tip on gaining space: "I have found a well-timed waver can gain me some personal space on the lightly traveled county roads I often ride. When I first hear a car approaching I'll do a head check to gauge the distance back to vehicle. Then I'll move out into the lane a foot or two quite abruptly, move slowly back, and repeat once more. This seems to convince passing motorists that I am not to be trusted and need a large cushion. I noticed before that the straighter I rode, the closer they came.
