Slowbee Posted September 10, 2009 Share ok, so at some point I am going to replace my cranks. But what brands of cranks are out there and how do the differ from each other ? Shimano, has the deore, lx, xt, xtr range Then there is truvativ (stylo etc....) KCNC are the ones I currently have how do you tell the difference between them all, or does it matter very little ? felt cg Posted September 10, 2009 Share Are you worried about :weight ?cost of replacement rings?reliability?
Slowbee Posted September 10, 2009 Share weight, not worried reallycost, partially concerning, I dont want to spend a fortune for very small differences (and also dont like the carbon route, although not sure why, its not like I am going to break them)reliability, yes, and also readily servicable and easy to do (but I think that more about the bearings inside)
felt cg Posted September 10, 2009 Share Well than I would go for Shimano SLX cranks,+/- 900grams ; tough & reliable, easily serviced ,steel middle ring, chainrings are not expensive to replace.I think CW cycles had them for about R1400.00.
Slowbee Posted September 10, 2009 Share and the bb ? whats the difference between shimano and truvativ ?
felt cg Posted September 10, 2009 Share technically I think it is how the crank arm is fixed to spindle.Only heard good things about both.
Slowbee Posted September 10, 2009 Share a quick search showed shimano is shimano and truvativ is sram, and there is like 500000 choices of cranks based on type of riding (good marketing), kcnc have just one crank according to the website and I have this on my bike - but am looking to change. brussel Posted September 11, 2009 Share I have the slx and they are great. Teh bearings on the BB are perfect after 6000 km and lots of tough mtb riding and racing...steel middle ring is great - gives good lifespan on the most used ring

Dirtbreath Posted September 11, 2009 Share Why do you need to change? You can do just a BB on its own if thats what needs replacing. Have a look at all the different options on CRC if you are set on a new crank.
hagar Posted September 11, 2009 Share i ordered these a wekk ago for R1300 http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=26946
droo Posted September 11, 2009 Share For proper bling, try Middleburn RS7. Lifetime guarantee, and the spider can be switched between 5 bolt, 4 bolt, 3 ring, 2 ring, single, red, blue, black... the list goes on forever. On CRC, check it out... somewhere round 2.5 - 3k, depending on options.
Slowbee Posted September 14, 2009 Share will any BB work with KCNC cranks or do you need a specific BB ? who makes race face .. and where on the scale do they fit ? and droo, what on earth are middleburn's?
dirtrider Posted September 14, 2009 Share Any BB ? Do you mean the type of external BB you find on most decent bikes ? Race Face did not impress me and was off the bike after about 800km ! Middleburn is for people that like to be bling .
NotSoBigBen Posted September 14, 2009 Share I now use an LX BB on my RaceFace cranks ......
Slowbee Posted September 14, 2009 Share DR, I mean do KCNC cranks need to have a special BB made only for the KCNC crank.I ask this cause the LBS in servicing the BB with the cranks so the KCNC are very tricky to get right on the BB.
