Hey, we use to get those and decent medals back in the days. My first Argus we had to buy our medals and you could only do so if you have finished, but you got an embroided badge at the finish. And a few weeks later you got a certificate in the post.Mampara2009-09-15 07:51:16

Is it just me' date=' or does the quality of race medals seem to be deteriorating? I looked back at some of my older ones last night, which made last Sundays Dome2Dome medal look really sh*te.
I really would pay R50.00 extra race fee for a medal that is pleasing to look at...

Or you can just copy the template from Action Photo, Copy the logo and print your own certificate.  My Comrades certificate is homemade and includes photos.  It forms the background for the frame holding the embroidered badge and medal.

I like that idea Linnega. I may do the same.

I also only bother to display medals which were a challenge for me, so far thats my Comrades, Two Oceans and my two or three international marathon medals, and I am very proud of them, as they signify to me, the massive sacrifice it took to prepare for these events.

Personally I can also do without the cycling or even the 10km / 21 km running medals, I have hundreds and I dont really see these events as a big challenge, but I can understand, to others cycling 100kms could be a life goal and a huge achievement, who are we to suggest they shouldnt get a medal.?

Agree on the boeries Ira - one of the few things I missed about Pretoria ...

But anyway I don't have any medals. OK, so I've only done two races so far, 42km Die Burger MTB Challenge and Gravity and all I got to show is a bottle of Rose from Die Burger.

Part and parcel of the modern era! The more we read Jim Collins good to great crap and talk about quality the more we have actually gone backward in my opinion!! Not only medals mate...most things!!

I always accept the medal at the finish as on the occasions when I refused to do so the people handing them out looked really offended. Then when no one is looking, when I empty my wrappers from my jersey into the nearest bin, I toss in the medal as well. Its not that the race means nothing to me but I dont need a medal to remind me of the race. My Pro Patria medal from the SADF went the same way I am afraid.

Aaaah...that explains the Bergie showing me his "war medal" and claiming to be asking me to support  a war veteran.....LOLLOL

The Dome "medal" was an absolute beauty compared to the piece of cr@ap they dished out for the Tour de Soweto.

TDS was one of those "pin on" badges. Only the pin was removed and a ribbon inserted.

All they do is collect dust and clutter up the house anyway. I usually write my race time on the back of them with permanent marker. Just because I like to brag about the fact that I can write.

I dont even take a medal at the finish. If they somehow force one into my pocket I give it to the first kid I see. The only ones I keep is the ones I actually won, and that wernt given to everyone finishing the race/run.

Okay, it seems that the idea of a medal is still popular.  When people complete a challenging event or gets placed in the top of a race then they would like some proof that they have actually done so.  So medals for events that are seen as awesome by the athletes peers need to have some item of commemoration, like a trophy, medal, tshirt, badge, tie ext ext.

The challenge is to determine an athletes threshold in terms of "Achievement".

Sometimes value is placed on extremely hard events like CApe Epic, Transbaviaans, Comrades, Two Oceans ext.  Sometimes it is on a "first" like the first sub-3 hours Argus or the first time a 10km is raun under 40 minutes.  A medal is a symbol that you have "arrived" as an athlete.  So for a guy that has done CApe Epic, Transbaviaans, Comrades, Two Oceans, a chuch fun ride medal is a bit common, (Unless there is a reason, like being the first event they road, or road witha girlfriend ext).  MEdals can also equal memories.
