Have a cool pic from the top of the Chumba following the Shova down Bridal. Nice view with all of Toaki in the background...can't get the pic small enough though.

Yeah, that's my riding buddy and his wife. She is quite the adventurer. When there's a puddle she heads straight for it!

She rode the Chumba to the top as she is looking for a dual. On our way to Bridal she left us behind in her dust as she streaked ahead. When we got the top my buddy saw that she was still in the big chainring!

Holy freaking something!

  • 3 weeks later...

I have been an admirer of the Chumba bikes for quite a few years as they advertise regularly in the MBA magazine. I quite liked the XCL as it looked very aggressive. Then Ngala 24 posted some pics of the VF2, saying it was available locally.... After reading some reviews on the VF2, where most people said it was a more versatile bike, I decided to take a closer look. Fast forward a few weeks...<?: prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />

So, I took delivery of my new build early last week. All the components come from my pervious bike. It was a difficult choice between the blue and white, but I am happy with my choice. The black with the red bling looks great, but my previous frame was black with red, so I wanted a change.

The specs are as follows:

XT drivetrain and shifters

Hope Tech X2 brakes with 183 mm floating rotors

Race Face Atlas bars

FSA stem (tbc)

Hope Skewers

Xt Wheelset

Kenda Nevegal rubber 2.4 front and 2.1 rear

Thomson Elite layback seat post

I finally had a chance to take it out on Saturday morning after the great rains on Friday night, and man it was fun in the mud! (See the before and after pics)

Impressions:

Let's just say, I'm no expert, as I have now only ridden two F/S bikes and I will not talk about linear this and progressive that, but what I will say, is that it was a rush. The higher position of the bb makes you feel like you have miles of ground clearance. It climbs well and descends like a rocket.

The RP23 still needs a bit of fine tuning for my weight, but it soaks up the bumps and helps keep the wheel firmly on the ground. If you look down now and then you will see how the pivot is working to soak up those bumps. As you will see in the pictures, the mud clearance, even with the big Nevegals is more than enough.

I had a great time in the mud as a first outing and could not help feeling that this bike will handle anything you throw at it, and will handle all types of terrain very well. In fact we even had our first little lie down together.

Gavin is a great guy to deal with, so I encourage you, if you are looking for something which is a little different, and what I believe to be good value for money, compared to the bigger brands, consider a Chumba. Test riders wanted....

I thought the advertising an SAt AM on the spruit was brilliant! Other suppliers should consider doing the same. Its such good publicity!

Would have loved a test ride, but with all the mud it would have gona from brand new to a demo in half a metre!
