Only when it give problems and sometimes the cables are fine and the only the housing is done. But you will struggle to re-thread the old cable into the new housing so just replace everything then.

When changing gears becomes a problem .

 

 

 

not necessarily.. you might only be experiencing slack in the cables, or the cable housing may be dirty.

 

clean and fine tune first before replacing.

 

 

 

when the cables are new, you should have the tension adjusted again after a couple of rides.

Make your own judgement call from time to time.

 

Shift the derailer all the way to its most relaxed position. On most bikes this will be in the high gear.

 

Now loosen the derailer cable anchor bolt. Hold onto the free end of the cable and shift up and down against your own resistance. The cable should move freely. It shouldn't be gritty or sluggish.

 

Replace cable if needed and post another thread on how to set your gears.
