XTR cable set

I have been told by 2 people now how much better their bikes gears shifted after fitting the XTR cable set.

 

Is this because this cable set is better or is it mostly just due to the new clean cables and sleeves

 

I see Shimano say the inners have a special coating on them are they worth fitting as I can get a complete set for 220 rand

 

I was interested to hear feedback on these after being used for a while but for so cheap I will prob just  get them anyway

The only special coating is on the shift cable itself, The main difference comes in the fact that the ends have better sealing to stop cr@p getting in thus increasing the lifespan of the cable set.

 

At R220 for set, buy the whole lot!!!

The XTR cables are great, and work incredibly well, as long as you change them regularly. That special coating on the shift cables eventually wears off, and the little black specs soon clog up your outerhousings, making shifting problematic.

 

If you are looking at longevity in your cables, rather go for the standard non coated cables.

XR cables outer casing is the secret ingredient.

 

The Shimano SP41 outer housing has a low viscosity silicon based oil in the greasethey use. This makes the teflon coated able glide very smoothly through the housing.

the grease also keep moisture out so prevents corrosion of the housing and the cable.

 

I buy SP41 outer housing by the metre and use any gear cable thats teflon coated. I also use Shimano Cable ends. these have 2 orings in to assist with keeping dirt out.

 

Also works out cheaper than a cable set.

I don't buy sets, I just get the XTR inner cables and then normal 2m SIS outers, a few ferrules, do-nuts and end caps. Should be less then R200.

end caps are R5-00 each (Or R100 for 100 if you buy the box) and you need 6 tops = R30

 

XTR Cables x 2 = R120=

 

Total R210-00

 

Use normal RavX cables for R20-00 ea and the price comes down tp R130 total.

the last time I bought, July, it was R20/m for the outer. R55 for the cables. Shop gave me the end alu seals for free. Ferules were R2.50ea. Looks like I should have stocked up.
