Nothing to weird there. In all probability, (if thats a 1 1/8" head tube) what the guy has done is as follows:

 

Bought an aftermarket alu steerer tube, shimmed the clamps and converted the whole set up from 1.5 " to 1 1/8".

 

There are also companies, ie Project 321 and many small European machinists, who produce aftermarket kits to reduce the steerer tube diametre. The main attraction of using Leftys is their super linear spring rate and their insane lightness. Top end Lefty SL DLR weighs 1100 and something grams with out any modifications.

ja those lefties always looks odd to me too!

there's only downside to a lefty?the annoying comments at the start of a race. "couldn't you afford a full fork?"?"hey, someone stole the other half of your fork". gets funnier every time you hear it?not.

smiley9.gif At the Bekker Bundu Bash a TCS rider came flying past me and I atold him his fork was broken. He actually looked down and just shook his head.
