AFAIK only the 10 speed ones are "use once".

That's correct. To remove the 10sp link (called a Powerlock) you really do need a pair of pliers.

I have remved and refitted my 10-speed link multiple times (on advice of my LBS mechanic) despite the dire warning on the package.  Yes, I used pliers, but I am careful and they snap right back into place.  If it aaint broke, don't replace it!

You shouldn't need to use pliers ... in fact' date=' I'd advise against it (simply because you may end up bending the plate).  As long as you give yourself a bit of slack on the chain and make a "Z" with the links either side of the Powerlink, it should disengage with finger-strength alone.[/quote']

9-speed yes, but if you can remove a 10-speed powerlink with your bare hands you are Superman!  Pliers work just fine

Yip, I was referring to 9-speed chains, where the link can be used multiple times over.  If the manufacturer specifies single use only, I'd kinda go with their recommendation (and use pliers to remove).  There are other 10-speed quick-links, which can be used more than once.

Okay I was reading from the 10-speed power link instructions about use-once' date=' the 9-speed talks about opening for reuse as above   [/quote']Real men don't read instructions!

Absolutely worth it - never had one fail on me yet!

I've humped my stem as a result of one. But in fairness it was a few thousand km old, and I was trapping like a gorilla at the time.

Still wouldn't go back to them pin thingies. Way easier to clean a chain with a powerlink.

Works well just dont try take it off' date=' its very difficult or i am doing it wrong.[/quote']

They do get a bit jammed up and stuck.

Some handy plier work is some times required.

or these Park tool twezers:

Rather than buying this expensive and heavy tool - take a lenght of "blou draad" about 8cm in lenght, bend it at the middle, insert it in the same way as when using the Park tool, squeeze the end of the wire towards one another.
