If I sense a faster rider behind me on a single track (often) I will make way when I can, I think its the right thing to do and when I find myself behind a slow coach (rare) I would sooner do a bit bundu bashing when possible to pass than start shouting 'left' or 'track' or whatever you supposed to belch out? but hey that me.

Well often the 80k's starts before the 40k's then you have this situation for some of us slackers left behind but wanting to do the longer ride. And laps, did you forget about that huh?

Anyway riding along a footpath on a pavement this beautiful afternoon gave me that moment of clarity as to the origins of my personsal ethos in this regard: if you ride payments you have to share them with pedistrians, and I always give way if possible, and will cycle around them or wait to pass if they dont see me. I really dont expect them to get out the way and if they do I will always acknowledge and thank that, even if it just a momentary hand signal, so dealing with slower riders on single track is the same as fellow pavement users for me.

Although the exception is downhills: thats the time I want cautious slowbees to get out the way, and get slightly peeved if I am held up, mainly because with that lefty I dont want to have to touch the brakes.?

Why is all the "faster" riders stuck behind the slow riders?????

Shouldn't they be upfront?

Exactly....!

Staggered starts with bad or no seeding, Slow riders gathering at the front of the start shute, Shorter distance riders catching up to slower riders on longer distance, Lap racing, ...

faster riders arriving late at the start , wannabee speed freecks that go "balls to the wall" at the start and blow after 20km, breakdowns, the list seems endless

I always assume that because you are such a "fast" rider that your skills will also be up to the same level . On downhills (Magalies Monster) I will take the road less travelled down the hill because I know there will be a few short distance riders pushing their bikes in the middle of the track etc . Again some people frown upon this practise but it is like the taxi driving in the yellow lane , he is outta our way as long as there are no broken down vehicles in that lane . I am also normally ok unless somebody is lying in the grass or taking a dumb behind a rock . Anyboby that is racing for the top 1000 places and is behind me 20km into the race will just have to do the same and overtake when I show him to or leave the "racing" line and overtake .

I think no matter how you handle this issue, good manners will usaully do the trick no matter what. If you act like a roadie on the trail well then you deserve to get flamed. As for rideing on jeep track, where both lanes are good to ride, then keep left, this was the case on my ride last night, I came aroud the corner, and an oke cruising the other way was in the right hand lane (Both sides where ggod for riding) Luckilly we never collided, I held my line and he ducked sharply left, no problem, he said whoops! and I said whoa! We both saw the lighter side and all is well in the land.

just not cool when u constantly hav to turn sharply, swerve out the way because people dont listen when you shout "passing right" they just turn into your way...

I think the problem is with you shouting..the tired (read rookie) riders probabaly do not hear you behind them and then you yell "passing right " and all they probably hear is right and so they turn right.  I announce that I am behind them by greeting and then I say keep your line I am going to pass you on the right or whatever side I am going for..it has worked everytime..I suggest keeping the shouting for the front of the pack guys that understand the lingo.

The IMBA trail ethos serves as a guide here.

"Always yield trail"

So what does that mean?

it means, don't be a selfish git. The trails are there for everyone. Share them.

In SA our road rules says keep left pass right. Yield to traffic on your right. Only initiate overtaking or enter a lane when it is SAFE to do so. ie when you have cleared the traffic around you.

Lets not bring the road mentality onto the trails. Share share share share

I'm stating to get worried about this mtb thing. I bought the bike to get away from all the crazies in tin cans, now I have to worry about the other crazies on bikes.
