Ghetto Tubeless - Info Needed

Being new to mountain biking I am still a bit clueless on some technical things.

I have just bought a second hand bike and the seller told me the bike is running on Ghetto Tubeless tyres.

Can someone please elaborate for me - what should i know before going on a long ride with no spare, no pump, no idea!??

My advice would be to open up those tyres to see whats going on inside. Its not fun trying to put in a tube when you cant remove his ghetto conversion.

Makes sense. I thought of doing that but was worried that i would lose the conversion if i stripped it down.

This is why i'm trying to figure out what to expect and what to do...

You'll probably struggle to get it to seal. Make sure there is enough sealant in and try to pump it with a floor pump. If that doesnt work take it to a garage it inflate it.

Cool thanks - i think i must open up and see whats going on. It's pointless me riding, getting a flat and then not knowing what the hell to do...

Ghetto tubeless refers to a cheaper but reliable method to convert standard or tubeless wheels to a tubeless system.

Tubeless benefits are less punctures and allows you to use a lower tyre pressure which results in better traction / less rolling resistance.

Tubeless usually requires the use of a liquid sealant inside the tyre to seal holes in the tyre wall, this sealant tends to dry up or form a fugly looking birds nest inside your tyre after a coupla months which must be removed and replaced with fresh sealant.
