I cycle about 20+ km per week, and my butt hurts like hell. My current seat is a ?standard spec one?; (I am building up a hopefully great bike around a Specialized Epic DS frame). I am upgrading components as I go along / as I have bucks to spend.

Background

I had my bike properly set up at the sports science institute in <?: prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Cape Town, so its not my setup.

Apparently my leg muscles are short, not sure if this is the correct term, but I find it hard to touch my toes.

I have been cycling now for the past 3 months and my butt should have been fine by now.

I want to get a new seat that works properly, I looked at MTB seats and saw the FIZI:K range, it was suggested I go for the GOBI-XM seat. At about R1, 500.00

Can anybody make suggestions to what I should go for? I am doing the Argus in two months plus and the Karoo to Coast in Oct.

Saddles are very personal.I think Specialized make CRAP saddles.Forget about body geometry etc.Never heard of a cyclist complain about a sore nob but plenty about sore but.I personally think Fizik make the best saddles and i'm sure they will have something in thier range that will work for you.I ride the aliante on my mtb and my roadbike and with a couple of epics etc have never had a problem with my ass.

Hi ,

No matter what the saddle you need to cycle.

If you do only 20 km a week you will not get used to the saddle.

So my advice , take it up to 20 km a day and see if in week two you still have the same problem.

Agree 100% x 1000

I do 20km on my commute each day alone.

Another issue is bibs. I've got the Planet-X saddle and Anatomic bibs. My butt loves them. Cheaper than a mid-range saddle.

km's per week....

Guys I meant a single ride of between 20 - 35km per week.

I ended up buying the FIZIK, GOBI, at R1600.00, hope it was money well spent.

I'm doing the 40km in Franschhoek tomorrow morning, I will report back on how my butt feels agfterwards!

Your arse is going to feel like an open fleshwoundLOL

Or maybe not. I had agony on 2 saddles before gettin my latest one - and the moment I went on my first ride it was just perfect. No pain, no problems, just great!

Hope you have the same luck. (well, better, since that was my 3rd saddle...)

I did the  Franschhoek Lions/Porcupine MTB Challenge, yesterday on the brand new saddle, (3h47 minutes in the saddle),  it was the first time on the saddle, and I did not feel any discomfort at all. It was unreal, it also did expect a bit of that run in pain that you have the first 10 minutes of a ride.

So I can really recomend the FIZIK, GOBI, at R1600.00
