Well cycling can't be the only industry where end users import high-value stuff from overseas. Is the same thing happening outside of cycling?

Sars needs to be transparent about this. At what value does a shipment require clearance? Perhaps our resident clearing agent can enlighten us?

Back in the day it used to be any goods over the value of R500 but the Customs act stipulates that all goods entering the SA should be declared to customs and duty vat be collected upon. The post office does this for you hence you paying your vat amount directly to them, the ones im busy with have been grabbed by customs officials looking through incoming mail and randomly checking.

I think its luck of the draw at the moment and probably falls more to size of you box than to value of your goods

You probably find that there is a new person in charge at mail centre and has up the game a little and that in time things will calm down again

I imagine you are correct.  It isn't happening Durban side at the moment and I presume this is because Durmail have their own customs clearance process, so most mail is being fed straight to Durmail before customs get their grubby paws on it.

Would love to put a face and a name to this new person who may be in charge. It annoys me that my CRC order is taking longer than usual. And it annoys me that the system is making it harder than normal for me to pay my tax and keep the country running.

Is a clearing agent necessary, or can we rock up at the mail centre with cash?

Apparently a clearing agent is required.

From past experiance, yes when they detain it for a formal clearance its best to go through a clearing agent. Will probably leave you with some hair in your head.

But you can go try at the mail centre, maybe there is another option i dont know about. Or call them and see what they say, ill always back the easiest option

Please guys take note though that if you are doing a formal clearance and you have jerseys and helmets and gloves and other items that attract duty you are going to pay the duty, you wont get away with it. So be prepared to kack en betaal

ngala24 - 300 bucks to clear thats cheap as chips, I'm not going to bother trying to compete with that :-)

(for the record my parcel is on day 22 now with nothing in site and no tracking number - in future i think it has to be group orders and use the UPS service and stay well clear of the post office)

Hi Jules

From my experience, the lady at the help line said I could come over to the Mail Centre (can't remember the address - but its next to Emporers Palace) to drop off the paperwork and hopefully get it there & then. I elected to fac the docs through, and instructed them to release into the postal system so I could then pay the VAT on collection at the normal post office. That worked fine, although you have no control or idea if it is even happening.

If you have time on your hands (but who does) going in person with all the relevant order, invoice, proof of payment, ID book, & cash might be best.

Rock im just trying to help out fellow hubbersThe Cape Town market is all yours though

how strict are your guys with country of origins......they could nail you R500 for each one incorrectly declared and you know the stuff is made all over the place these days.......

Not strict at all, hardly ever have COO issues up here. It amazes me how each office has different procedures, what works in JHB dont work in DBN and is different for CPT aswell

I must say EMS is very helpful. They take a long time to answer the phone, but once they've converted your int'l tracking number to a local number, means your parcel is already in their system. It takes a day or so for them to calculate the fees and duties. And all you do is pay them in cash over the counter. the mail centre is at the airport's new long term parking. Easy stuff for the east randers.

When I called customs earlier, the lady there told me that its mandatory to use a clearing agent if your parcel gets detained.
