And that's exactly what you DONT want!

Problem is, the cycling bug has bit and I will have to fork out some more smackaroos for a decent bike!

Around R23500 for cervelo R3 with Records.

Budget was originally R3000' date=' then R15000 and then I saw the cervelo.

?

That would be campagnolo records 10sp.

Cars and bikes are different. Frames may last longer, but cyclists like new fancy pretty frames. Components lose their value depending on use. Also the bling factor.

?

And because cycling stuff is alot cheaper than cars, people would rather buy new if they can't get a very good bargain on second hand stuff.

you mean record. no "s" :)

The biggest problem with buying 2nd hand is you have very little chance of finding the brand/type/colour/size of bike that you want in a condition and at a price that you are happy with - unless you wait around for ages ...... so second hand buyers are either looking for bargains (in which case they might change their dream 'spec')  or they scour the classifieds without really needing or wanting a particular item, just 'browsing'... again this is for a bargain!

I wouldn't pay more than 50% second hand.

Stewie,

Cars and bicycles are both commodities. they are bought and sold and both depreciate over time.

You either pay the price or negotiate a better deal, simple as that.

I splurged 14K for a low mileage MTB from a Hubber shop-owner. Its a lot of cash for something bought with no real knowledge about its condition, but boy has it proved its worth. What was a great spec on paper turned out to be excellent in real life, at about 65 % of its new price.

I reckon everyone needs to do their own risk / reward analysis on the offer at hand and make up their own minds. It also helps when buying from the Hubber dealers, they prob don't want to spoil future sales by selling schlock.

27k for for my wife's Yeti. Although used the seller claimed to have ridden it twice which wqas evident as the bike looked as new. That was about a 10k saving on a bike that had done less than 100 kays.

My household insurance covers my bikes for any damage so wasnt too stressed about warranty claims.

The only mtb that I have bought new was my first one in 1990 and that's because anything decent was as scarce as hen's teeth. That bike is still going by the way.

Good on you DB, its good to see that there are people out there who are willing to apply decent depreciation to used goods, especially well looked after goods.

Still a lot of MOOLA but we had been looking for a while.

I paid 18k for mine with full XTR. It was in fair condition but had seen a lot of mileage.

I think I have seen better deals on the hub since. I think with the amount that is now posted in the for sales posts there seems to be lot more better deals around.Clap

Perhaps but you got what you wanted and in the condition you required.

I thinks theres a lot of stuff being sold 2nd hand now thats way undervalued which leaves me wondering if theres any value on selling goods 2nd hand....or alternatively in buying anything new!

If somethings being sold too cheaply I'm always suspicious. Is it WELL USEd or stolen?

as a seller, I on the other expect to be rewarded for condition. Seems theres many people not interested in anything but the lowest price. which tells me that quality is really of no concern...
