Tubeless MTB Wheels - Mavic vs Shimano

Hi Guys

 

I'm sick and tired of tubeless conversions with tubeless tyres (mainly 'cos the tyres fit so tight).

 

So I'm looking at tubeless rims.  These are the two options that are easiest for me - Mavic's from LBS with good backup etc, the Shimano's from a well known chain where negotiation is a must.  I don't know much about wheels, but these are approx same weight.  Mavics are straight pull spokes, Shimano's (I think) are normal 'J' spokes.

 

Bike is a GT iDrive1 4.0, current wheels are DT Swiss 455.  I'd like to try and keep at least to the same level of wheel as the DT's.

I had the same decision to make and eventually went with the new American Classics Tubeless wheelset instead of the Mavics Crosstrail or Shimano XT sets.  They are lighter and are in the same price range.

What about a set of XT Hubs and Mavic 819 rims handbuilt @ CRC? Similar price range (I think?)

I agree with the 819's and XT hubs.

The 819 rims would retail in the region of R1000 ea so they may not be an option at  this budget...I'm not too sure of the prices on CRC...

I've got the stock wheels that came on an anthemX, 819 rims, dt swiss (370, I think) hubs - they seem bullet proof to me.

but the xt wheels would look sweet on my frame...

I do. The 819's are bombproof. And they use standard spokes, so fixing it is a breeze.

I got the 819s built onto Hope Pro II hubs (red) by CRC. About 3k and are really sweet.

in all honesty I believe these are the better wheels.

 

X819's are strong and Tubeless. nuff said

I got the 819s built onto Hope Pro II hubs (red) by CRC. About 3k and are really sweet.

 

 

 

That would be my choice as well. I've got Pro II with Mavic 823's on the Chumba. They're a little heavy but rock solid. I would definitely go for Mavics again.

What spokes? I'm about 85kg and don't have much finesse when it comes to choosing lines. But I don't jump off houses etc...

Hope 2 Pro Hubs: ?292

 

XT hubs: ?204

 

 

 

Are the hope hubs worth ?88 extra?
