Following the feedback from my earlier poll, I have created a new poll with just the combinations that came out tops.

Just stick to the options in this poll as these came out the clear leaders from the previous poll. You may however supply a montivation via reply if you strongly feel that another brand/combination is better.

Mountain Bikers, please give your honest opinion as the results of this will assist plenty of riders to make an informed decision. Tyre choice is a personal preferance, but the result of the poll may just indicate which combination is the best.

Only a lucky few can afford to have dry and mud tyres. You need to concider a single combination that will work all year.

Conti Race K front(2.2) and Conti Mountain K rear(2.4)
Unbeatable combo!

Are you sure? Normally you will have the Mountain King (2.4) up front and the Race King (2.2) at the rear. Why will you go with the gripiest tyre at the back?

I had a tyre on for the 2005 epic and only took it off in 2008 it gave me no trouble and was the best grip/wear/dry/mud  WTB weirwolf race,

Am a newbie so new at this but surely u want grip where the power is - in the rear wheels? This is how it is done with cars? Would like to hear the reason for the gripiest tyre in front? Perhaps its to keep the line when in rough situations?

I do crossmark front and monorail back for riding in PMB - tacky clay and loose of hard.

Did some single track yesterday around Cedara and was like a pig in ****; huge smiles with the grip they give climbing and cornering.

For dry to slightly mucky xc the aspens are gold, rode at rietvlei sunday and they railed so well went into a few of the corners too fast and almost hugged some trees hehe.

For heavier okes on marathons will probly cut the sidewall, its not UST.

Try 2x Monorails

Me too and I think they are awesome. Fast tread in the center, and plenty of grip on the sides with those C knobs. Although I am looking at some weight weenie tubeless tyres for cross country etc. and keeping the Monorails for general rugged rides.

Race kings front and rear , they are awsome for GP , even quite good in the mud although not a mud tyre.

Being a Conti man myself I'm not sure if I'm happy with 44% of the votes going to Conti (race king and king/mtn conmbos).

On the one hand I can't be wrong - on the other hand my "secret edge" has been removed ;-)

Gooooo Conti!

In other news - the Michelin Wild Race'R 29" tyre is hitting our shores soon - I have a pair on order and will certainly post my feelings here when I've threashed them about a bit.

Word of warning about conti mountain kings - they wear out pretty quickly on tar. I've probably only got about 1000km on mine and the rear is looking pretty worn already, just from making the short bit of tar ride to Tokai from my house. Front still looks good to go for another 1000. They are great tires but not the grippiest in loose/sandy conditions, and very expensive comparatively!

My next set I am going with WTB Wolverine 2.2's UST, they are great tires for the dry conditions in the Cape. Nice and voluminous for soaking up bumps on a hardtail.

Thank parra for the valuable information on one of the frontrunners in the poll. We now just need some people to motivate why they rate the Maxxis Crossmark that high. Tell the MTB riders why must they go for it.Smile
