Once, what you are saying here, and what the Velokhaya website says is a bit different, but the jest has a MAJOR difference!  According to the site money must be raised to get mass participation that will/might lead to riders on elite levels.  BUT, now you're taking guys overseas (I can't even afford a holiday like that!) with that money.

Secondly, once again, the question is why only "black" children (pls guys. not the racial card!).  What about kids in Danville/Lens/Mitchells Plain?  They live "in communities where there are ? and never have been ? such facilities" (cycling facilities.  Quoted from site)

Please let us know about this.  I will gladly contribute to your cause, BUT not if it's one sided!!!!

Unfortunately sounds like a well intentioned plan that hasn't been properly thought through ito implications and sustainability

Now that's nice and very true political talk.  Only problem is that the guys will just say "so what"?  The basis was put down when CSC was here and the decision has been made.  What will the grumping and groaning of a few "elite" cyclists change?

Agree , I'd be happy if one white, 2/3 coloureds/indians go, and 5 blacks go, but now its only blacks (so it seems) Thats not representative of a rainbow nation.Confused

....

And its a bit extreme to blow R100,00+ to go to the TDF. Rather sponsor DSTV for 3 weeks. And to something more constructive with that money.

And thats just my 2($)c worth...

What I can say is that Glyn Broomberg has been trying his very best to develop cycling down in Cape Town, with some limited sucess. But I have to agree, I can't see how taking development cyclists to TDF will help them.

I know Lothando will be going (no problem as he has represented SA), but the others, I don't know.... The other 5 include a 13 year old girl, 15 year old boy, 2 juniors and another elite. Maybe the U14 cyclist - Emile Jacobs (who also belong to LDCA) was another option for them to take to the TDF, as he is the current U14 SA Road and Track champion. Some much needed exposure for their sponsors....ConfusedConfusedConfused

My opinion is that these development cyclists can achieve much more from the international teams (like Team CSC, T-Mobile ect...) visiting Cape Town during their off-season in December. They could arange for motivational talks, fun rides and personal interviews with these cyclists. Just imagine them meeting their international cycling idol face-to-face...

Keep up the good work, Glyn.Clap

This initiative WILL only work if the bike supported to the disadvantaged communities are strictly controlled. If the BMX's are wantonly distributed the initiative is doomed form the start!!!!!!The environment if a bike is given as a handout will be that the bike will become the property of the family head and will disappear into the survival of the family the moment the need arises.

Guys, you are trying to do a great job, but try to listen to some ideas on the hub.  Some of them might not be that bad and you might get more cyclists (i.e. money) behind you that way.  As ShaunH what difference it made!

Artikel in Die Burger 11/07/2007:

Frankryk laat ryers van Khayelitsha se o? blink

CHERICE SMITH 10/07/2007 11:16:37 PM - (SA)

KAAPSTAD. ?

Glyn Broomberg, ges?.

Hy vergesel die toergroep na Frankryk.

Zanele is die enigste meisie ?n die jongste in die groep. ?Ek is so bly en opgewonde.

Ronald het ges? sy familie is net so opgewonde soos hy.

Guys,

The LCA has chosen these kids on merit!!!!!!!! There were coloureds and whites were also eligible for selection but didn't meet the critreia with the exception of 1 - Kurt. Most of you fail to see the bigger picture........... these okes are icons in their community. I've been to the clubhouse. Here 100's of kids stand around waiting for an opportunity to ride. And yes, you may say......... use the money for them but CSC has extended an invitation to these guys and the potential partnership is going to be cemented and we in SA will be reaping the rewards. What this space. LCA has been successfull in having the then Liberty now Acsis Team. Yes, they may not be on the podiums too often but they are there in the bunches. Luthando was selected for the UCI B's as a sample of the results.

As for the Raleigh's of CSA, I agree 500% that there was no sustainable support and assistance for the handout. These guys here work for what they have and know that the equipment is not theirs and can be taken away should they fail to ride or continue to show interest

PPA supports this initaitive and we give them our full support and blessing.  They do great work and we are honoured to be associtaed with them and their efforts.

Zanele Tshoko blew the compitition apart in the Crit (U14 girls) at last weeks Eric van Enter on her very modest bike. The other girls rode state of the art machines.

Once, you need to take care of this rising star.

I think you guys are missing the point.

This is part of a very big' date=' sustainable transformation program with the objective of attracting more funding and infrastrucure into the transformation and development of cycling in our previously disadvantaged communities.

Lets not let this thread go the negative route of most other transformation/development threads.......................lets be positive about what's currently happening and what can happen through everyone's support.
[/quote']

How dare you say we are missing the point!!!!!!! You are missing the point with your pipe dream...... totally missing the point..... all this in a climate where the Minister of Police says people are self to blame for their problems while at the same time tells tax paying citizens they will have to pay to get more secure suburbs!!!!!!! Negative route???? we are critisizing your so called mission where you ask us to support something that looks weak and you critisize us with negativeness instead of campaigning..... forget about my support!!!!!!

The previous LOTTO distribution of Raleighs was run by CSA(SACF)/Lotto. Nothing came out of it. Some of the track Fuji's may still be running. What safeguards have you built in to stop this kind of abuse form happening agian.... and again... and again??????????
Agree with H 100% on this.....it's the old spin where if you don't follow a particular draconian government of the day you are labelled either unpatriotic or a "bad attitude"!!

OK then I will exibit the Cape mentality.

When we launched the initiative to put up signs the Cape Hubbers said why should they sponsor signs in Gauteng. Why should we then help so called underprivileged cyclists out of Khayalitsha and send them on fancy trips to the TdF and buy the BMX bikes. Let those grootbek Cape Hubbers sponsor them.

Shaun ek sal vandag inbetaal vir die nuwe kompetisie want die Kaapse initiatief is net vir die Kolonialers

LCA does not discriminate ito of colour. Yes, they may be based in Khaya but should a white kid come who has finincial constraints and potential committment, they would be considered I believe. This is not about race but creating opportunities and building a culture and love for cycling which was suppressed. Yes, there are commuters but we need to move onto the next level........

With regards to Shaun and his signs................. PPA was and still keen to be involved in the Cape but have not success in getting more info from him. I've had talks with the City of Cape Town staff who are keen to be involved. So, we are not as apathetic but awaiting more info to be forthcoming
