Motorcyclists on that road, especially weekends, are all weekend warriors - Rossi wannabees trying to go 280 around corners. Cyclists on the road especially weekends, are mostly Euro peleton wannabees who insist on riding IN or near the middle of the road despite all the accidents.

Result? Well apparently another accident involving motorbikes and bicycles near the Lion Park. Now the biker knows that Rossi has got a skill he does not have - emergency braking.  The cyclist now realize that the Euro peleton is not as cool as he initially thought.

I could not find any news about this anywhere so hopefully it's just a rumour, the accident that is ;)

Not a Rumour. It was a sad day yesterday. 3 harleys collided with each other on the road and ended up hitting two road cyclists from behind out near Teak Place. There were some serious injuries. Medics from the Teak Trail Race were sent to help before ambulances arrived. No news of how they are.

Well it was very close or I was hit by these speeders on the KDRP side of the Hekpoort climb yesterday. It would not have been their fault but if they were not speeding it would have been easier to control the situation. I also see there are hot hatch racing going on in the area. GTIs, Seats and Audis, all without number plates sitting on each others arses and going around at ridiculous speeds.

We have the same problem in Magalies with the weekend motorbikers, most are OK but some really do feel that they can fly,...in their jeans, takkies and sometimes a jacket. We have seen a couple of accidents over the years through the bends here.

I just dont get some road cyclists though (not tryinig to be demeaning) but, I see a lot of them on the backroads from paarl or stellenbosch, now the main arteries have very big shoulders and are fairly safe, but yesterday on my way to go kill myself going up paarl rock, there was a pelaton of roadies not following the main klapmuts road they took the klapmuts to paarl back road, that is extremely narrow two cars can hardly fit on that peace of tarmac.

And behold on this narrow bumpy road there are a group of 15 roadies riding on this road (like they own it) this road  has no shoulder, and has very litte space for cars to pass safley through the oncomming lane holding up a group of 6 cars behind them.

No wonder motorists get pissed off at cyclists. Im a cyclist myself but i would have not appreciated this behaviour. And if a motorist clipped one of these guys they were looking for it. I know ill probably get lambasted for this post, but cmon ladies and gents there should be rule, no shoulder no ride. Well in my opinion at least.

I was on the scene of the accident shortly after it happened.

Two cyclists were down and one motorcyclist.

One cyclist (Brad) had fairly serious but not life threatening injuries. Really deep laceration to the buttock, minor face lacerations. Looked likely a broken leg.

Other cyclist, did not get his name, had a pretty serious ankle injury most likely broken.

Motorcyclist also had broken leg.

Was not much we could do but keep the chaps comfortable until the medics arrived.

Kevin who was riding with us zooted off to Teak Place and alerted the medics at the MTB race who were there pretty quickly. Considering where we were, there was pretty speedy response time from at least another  three medical emergency units.

The lady paramedic, who came from Teak, took control of the site and was very professional.

The wife of the injured motorcyclist left her husband and was attending to Brad. The other motorcyclists were very helpful and concerned. They took control of slowing down traffic.

Lessons learned:

1.  No one on site knew the emergency numbers. Call them all, see who gets there first. 082 911 (Netcare), 082 124 (ER24), 112 (National emergeny call centre), 999 (National medical and fire emergency number), 10111 (Emergency police).

2. Alert the police as well. This was an afterthought but given the seriousness of the accident, they should have been there to investigate. There was likely some culpability for what happened.

3. Afterwards I was extremely grateful that the cyclists were not more seriously injured. Although I have a calm head in these sort of situations, suddenly my first aid training seemed so far away. I will be digging out that book again and doing some refresher work.

4. Motorcyclists are people too, the chap's wife stepped away from her own family to help others.

If anyone knows Brad or his buddy, please let me know, would like to follow up with him.

OK, so I'm not defending *some* road cyclists' arrogant attitude, but seriously... Why can a car not SLOW DOWN for a few seconds, wait for a decent time to pass, and do so safely? Why do 15 cyclists have to squash themselves into some long thin line or take a totally different route altogether, just to save some motorist 30 seconds on their trip?!?

are we really going to talk about this again? It does not matter if the road has one lane or ten, it is the law to ride single file ALL OF THE TIME.

.

Like he said 1 its the law, and two ask yourself this question, how would you feel if 30 pedestrians just walked in the middle of the road holding up traffic?

My point is the location and the way the were riding, they really should not complain if they get taken out by a car, that is simply an accident waiting to happen. And there are better roads in that area they can easily avoid this dangerous behaviour

Both trying to be speed freaks...Shame!

Nothing in the post suggest so far that they were speeding....I sounds more like a freak accident

And by the way its dangerous for the vehicle to overtake on that road, so its a 40 minute delay unless the motoris does something risky. If there was a shoulder the bunch of cyclists could simply move out of the way, but I have yet to see a roadie put his bike on the gravel and mud to get out of the way of a motorist.

Why do hubbers always JUMP to conclusions

"they were speeding"

"the cyclist must have been 15 plus side by side"

etc

Come on people
