I am interested in buying a digital SLR camera. To the people out there using them, any advice, what to look for, where to buy, courses to go on? Drop me a message if you want.

Thanks.... Big%20smile

The Nikon D400 ( I think) get svery good ratings and I think its been voted as the best entry level Digital SLR

The Canon 400D also is a very good camera for starting of with

I would say to look at functionality of the camera (iow all the settings you can adjust, like white ballance and shutter speeds, ISO, F stop and so) and obviously pic Megs

Take a look at Digital Planet, I think you can do comparesons on their site....

I use a Canon 300D and I'm very pleased with it, only thing is the white ballance settings seems to be a bit limmited, some cameras you can set a Temp value for better white ballance.....

I think the Canon has a better light meter, than Nikon, I recall something like that from my course..... MWNN and PhotoFairy and Crux will be the specialists here......

Stay away from the Nikon D40/D40X. they need special lenses that only Nikon make and you can not fit 3rd party lenses without loosing the autofocus feature.

Look for specials on Cannon 350Ds. Youshould not pay more then R5999 for the camera and a printer. Remember that it's quite expensive. You will need a good zoom lense and flash aswell. The high MPixels cameras also require bigger and more memory cards. The bags to carry everything around is also quite expensive.

Well, there are a few people running specials on the Canon 350D right now, so I would say I am pretty much set on that. I have looked at the Canon 400D but feel I would need to know a lot more about SLR's to spend the R9K required. Basically my questions are, Why SLR? What is special about it?

Control!!! I like to take long exposure photos and normal cameras' shutters can only stay open for a max of 30 seconds. One of my last photos I left the shutter open for 30 minutes. Also speed. The Canon 350d only takes 0.2 seconds so switch on. Focus is also alot faster and shutter lag, the time betwenn when you press the button till the camera actually captures the image, is also extremely shorter.

Ohhhh...... so leaving the shutter open longer you can take those pics where the people looked dragged out? Like zooming in slow motion?

SLR (Single Lens Reflex) means what you see throught the eyepiece is identical to what the camera lens is seeing. This is achieved with the use of mirrors i.e. like a periscope. Point and shoot cameras don't operate in this manner and there will be a degree of error attached.

yup!!! Open long=lot of light entering = night shots! Open short= less light=action/sports shots!!

Pantani, SLR's are the only "medium" if I can call it that where you can (reliably) change lenses, change your aperture and shutter speed manually while at the same time having the option to mik and druk.

The 400D is the best value for money at the moment, but is not much better than the 350D. Mampara has it right in terms of the two C's- Canon and Cannondale - two great brands (although you will probably argue that Cervelo and Colnago also starts with a C). You can't go wrong with a Canon, although I must admit the Nikons are very good cameras. Choice really.

If you can afford it, go SLR. Digital zoom is a hype and not worth it. However, most of the Sony mik and druks on the market is perfect if you want to take the occasional pic, and then slip it back in your pocket.

Where to buy - Gooi a draai at Kameraz in Rosebank before you go anywhere else, even if its just for advice. They have a lot of very good second hand stock, especially lenses and the guys in the shop are all professional photographers. I have bought quite a bit of stuff there for my wife.

When buying a Canon 350' date=' stay away from that lens that came with the camera, it?s just a fancy paperweight.

I disagree. I've got some great photos from it and I will use it for still a while I save for new ones. (anyone want to buy Equinox wheels)

Net so, but with the sport shots you want a SLR that has a high "repetition rate" ie how many shots per second. I think the 400 D does 3 shots per second, which is quite lekker. The pics where people are drawn out are called panning shots, specifically if the object is in focus and the background is dragged out. Lots of fun - c'mon, you can do it!Star

Aaand you can fit decent lenses to a SLR

Pantani, obviously everyone will punt a different brand - its like asking what bike you must buy. Best advise I can give you is to go to a place like Kameraz or Universal Image (ask for Norman at Fourways) and let them give you a demo on the Nikon, the Canon and the new Sony Alpha and make up you own mind.

Any questions PM me. If you want to come by one evening, PF and I will be happy to give you a quick intro and demo on our cameras.
