I'm not sure, but its possible his psychological issues clouded his judgment. The lift didn't go all the way to the top floor, that's for sure.

 

I enjoyed Pantani - his unhinged and highly emotional approach to cycling made for excellent suicide breaks and tactically questionable racing. Much better than todays sterile "use the team to reduce numbers until there are only 5 of us left then attack only within the final 5km to get 30 seconds advantage at the most" tactics.

 

Ban race radios and reduce teams to 6 men maximum I say.
