Dicky DQ Posted August 29, 2010 Share is the bearings we talk about the same ones that we find on www.chainreactioncycles.com ..... http://www.chainreactioncycles.com/Models.aspx?ModelID=40969 ....... that sells for ZAR 162.39 ....... no wonder the cartel is so scared of cyclists importing their own stuff. A classic case of the cartel shooting themselves in their own foot..... or should it be feet ........... because there are so many holes in them already!!!!!!! Not Defending CL, but that is ZAR 60 odd difference. Then it is not bad for a Local "Upmarket" LBS.
EigerSA Posted August 29, 2010 Share Cyclelab has a right to charge what they want, they're in business to make money, not help you out or do you a favour. And of course it's your right not too make use of their service or products. Learn to service your own bike, read the instruction manuals, research the internet, shop around.. this is what the rest of the world does. Or suck it up and hand over the cash. Personally I only go into cyclelab to chat to the hot girl on the off chance she'll say 'yes', certainly not too buy from them, especially since the whole competition debacle (they cheated and lied to us people! what the hell are you still doing buying from them!). Flowta Posted August 29, 2010 Share Not Defending CL, but that is ZAR 60 odd difference. Then it is not bad for a Local "Upmarket" LBS. according to the OP it was R220 per bearing, but the CRC is R162 for the kit (2 bearings) if it is for the kit then it is not that bad compared to CRC, but it is still cheaper to go to BMG

WE SHOULD NOT SUPPORT ANYBODY WHO WILLFULLY FLEECE US OF OUR HARDEARNED MUNNY!!!!!! I am busy importing servo's and a gyro to upgrade my RC helicopter. The Hitec servos costs US$32-00 in the USA. The local distributor sells it for US465-00. For this price I can import spare gears, servo cases and even two complete servos' and it will still cost me less that in RSA. Makes one think does it not????

Guest Frail4Life Posted August 29, 2010 Share On Bearings. I just replaced my bearings for my back wheel. I did happen to be at a LBS and out of curiosity asked if he had bearings, he said NO. Whilst I was at the Bearing shop, he only had one bearing left in the size I needed, So he calls his supplier and makes arrangement for me to pick one up at their office. It was my choice to go past the Supplier and pick up the second bearing. The Bearing Shop really wanted my business so much he still dropped 20% on his price because I was going to pick it up myself. The price of the bearings was R20.00 each. For the amount KM's I cycle and the Heavy wear on parts I feel if there was any difference or cheap quality in the parts that I have purchased, I would be stuck sitting on the roadside everyday. goatman Posted August 29, 2010 Share ....wouldn't know?! Haven't and will never again set foot in a Cyclelab since the price fixing issue!!+1 Have been to a number of local bearing suppliers in the past and also ordered bearings from the UK and US before. It's good to take one of your old bearings along; makes getting the correct replacement that much easier. wac1 Posted August 29, 2010 Share It is the same as any market . Go to any dealer and ask for dealer prices and they are going to bend you over . Aftermarket is always cheaper . Chill People .

HowellingWulf Posted August 29, 2010 Share Absolutely. So long as the size and specification is the same the SKF etc. bearing will do just as well as the OEM bearing. In the case of the Mavics it's not the normal bearing specification, but once you know that it's a C3 clearance you should be able to get SKF equivalents (C3 clearances are usually used on shafts with a large interference fit or where there is significant thermal expansion). Unless you have a very specialist application (nothing on a bike falls into this category), there is no need to go to the effort of designing a bearing from scratch. It's much more efficient to just pick a suitable one from the catalog. Yes, just stay away from the cheap Chinese ones as they tend to be made to lower tolerances with lower grade material and won't last too long. Yip. You just confirmed what I thought!. On your knock-off stance - whilst on honeymoon in Thailand I bought "diesel" jeans for R200 a pair fully aware of the fact that they are fakes. The quality on those buggers are top notch. I can not justify paying R2,500.00 for a product that I can get for R200. Ok, sure it does not bare the correct hologram image within the pant but the quality is faaar superior to any local products of even quadruple the price. Mavic is the same as all the other brands..... giving something a fancy name to ensure tostesterone driven skinny young men are conned in spending munny for something that is not really different. Hurrah!!!!! !..... what's new pussycat. Sies shame on them.

Omlette Posted August 29, 2010 Share Serviced my wheels today and decided new bearings required. Tried all the local shops but nobody had the bearings (For Mavic Crossmax mtb wheels) Cyclelab had excellent service in that a pretty girl (that's always a good start!) met me at the door - asked what she can help with and then proceeded to see if they had the bearing. (other shops just said they don't have it - so 1 up for cyclelab) They did not have but she said she will phone around and see how soon she can get one. (2nd good point for CLab.) Finally she said she can get them for me - at R 220 each. After I picked myself up off the floor - I said cool bananas but I will go to the bearing shop myself thanks. Went to BMG - asked for the best bearing in that size - and paid R 70 per bearing. R 220 each VS. R 70 each ? So saving R660-R210 = R 450 ! by 20 minute drive. mmmmm..... service was (and also on previous occasions) very good, BUT the girl was not so pretty that I will pay that price .....or go back soon. Personaly I tend to avoid the yuppy shops, priced CL on a few things, my findings is that they where never competitive. Golden rule, ALWAYS shop around. Gasping Posted August 29, 2010 Share Seems to me there a fewer "yuppies" in cycling than I thought. Nice to see the niche market is really niche.
