I ride 8spd and happy with it. So I was at my LBS this afternoon and quickly asked the price of an 8spd chain, they reply R280 for a Shimano.

OK

Now for R85-R100 I buy GIANT branded KMC chains with a link. They last me on average 1500km on my MTB, I'm happy with that. Actually I think my previous chain still had a couple of hundred on them but liked the idea of fitting a new chain with a new cassette.

Big question, beside spinning me crap about weight, is there really any sense in spending 3 times more on a chain?

If your chains have been lasting long enough, then stick with them.

Personally, I'll never move away from the rock-solid, slightly-heavier-but-not-much, last-forever awesomeness of Shimano LX/105. Mine usually last around 1800-2200km and cost me R130/each if I buy them in a 3-pack from CRC. I've used XT and XTR ones as well, but quite honestly the weight-saving isn't worth it for a consumable to me.

I bought my bike second hand with campy chain. Have done 4000km on it and will probably do another few 1000's before replacing. You guys are rough on the chains

CAMPY rock !!

The posts above are discussing Mountain Bike chains. kempekkernoglia tried to make a mountainbike groupset many years ago but it was an horrendous failure so they never tried to do it again. Thank goodness...... just imagine what the costs would have been to replace chains on kempekker MTB groupsets.

R230.00 for a Campag C9 chain on CRC ,not to bad considering it is the old Record chain and will outlast most 9spd chains, but as you said it is a road chain and not mtb

What is the difference between a 9spd road chain and 9spd MTB chain? (Except price and packaging?)

I dont think there is a difference.

9spd is 9spd
