I did two from Knysna, and two circle routes. The sense of of achievement is pretty cool in the Knysna-Lourensford one, slowly getting closer each day (to home).

However, the riding was much better when we did the circle routes - more single track, and better scenery in general. Much less of the long district road stuff of the other route.

I only did my first one this year, but have been a keen follower since day one for whatever that is worth.

This year was a REAL MTB race, tough and technical. I know capable roadies who did it and suffered, whereas they would have been fine in previous years. Obviously not being bound by the route, Dr Evil can really string together amazing routes, routes with MTB soul. The route this year really blew me away, bit easier than expected, less climbing, but amazing.

I think avoiding potential mud on the garden route also considerably improves your bike's chances of making it.

I think a Epic is going from A-Z. Not A-B-C-B-C-A. Hope you get my point. Looking at how many Epic entries was up for grabs last time i think its loosing its flavour.

It was much better when it ran from Knysna. Holding it in and around Cape Town is kinda like holding the Tour de France around Paris only.

Perhaps they should change the name from ABSA Cape Epic to ABSA Cape Town Epic as it no longer travels through the Cape.

well if they would commit some of the income to trailbuilding, then they could do knysna to cape town and include singletrack.

i just think they shafted their riders when they went from staging six towns to three and doubled the price at the same time.

Well one thing that has not changed in recent epics is that you first pay and then 4 months later find out what you paid for. With the slow-down in the world economy and stronger rand, there will be a knock-on effect for 2012's Epic. Kevin Vermaak had a good formula for the first Epics, the fact that CPT has copied this formula to a degree is testement to that. He also did well to ensure official UCI status, ensuring that the top mtbers are coming to do the race.
