search for Todd Wells on youtube and hear his take on it - sure it might be marketing, but I have not heard a single bad thing pbaout a 29er.

Flog a 26er just to get a 29er probably not, but then I sold my 26er a couple of months ago alrady...

It's not the weight, it's the circumference.

its also weight at the bigger circumference. like an orange on the tip of a sword is heavy on the wrists

Yes Burry did look like he was working very hard on the hills. Was it the 29er or the single chain ring?

Personally I don't think the 29er has evolved enough yet (same as it's taken the duel sus a long time to evolve). You will never see a pro on a 29inch duel sus.

In the end we will need more money to have a few bikes hanging in the garage so we can decided on the day what one would think would be the faster machine on the day.

Or just get a Merida if you want to win :-)

Here's the interesting part:

Conti Race King Supersonic 26x2.0: 430g

Conti Race King 26x2.2: 570g

Which is 140g heavier per wheel - you can save more weight than the difference between a 26 wheel and 29 wheel by choosing a different tyre...

Some people use 100g of sealent per wheel - some use 150g (like me).

AM Classic 26 Tubeless: WEIGHT Front 691gr Rear 795gr Pair 1486gr

AM Classic 26 All Mountain: WEIGHT Front 721gr Rear 825gr Pair 1546gr

Just some silly examples to show that the weight difference between 26 and 29 is negligable.

I have said it before and I will say it again, why do us average okes always feel the need to compare ourselves with the Worlds Best ?

Intern is spot on the money, people have fallen for this hook line and sinker and the marketing done has been pretty brainwashing.

I will even take a bet that the trend percentage wise (if we take the amount of mountainbikers in S.A.) is higher than anywhere in the world.

I am big fan of 29'ers, been on them for the past 4 almost 5 years.

I don't have a 26 " bike anymore, should everyone else follow suit, hell no.

They are not faster, they are different.

Some dudes drive bakkies and others drive sedans , ultimately they can both take you to Durban and with all the speedtraps in place they would probably arrive the same time.

In the bicycles case the speedtrap and cruise control is attached between the hip and the ankle.

Indeed, should I get a 29'er to get faster? no, I should eat less, train more and stop suiping so much.

Spot on as always Anton.

Anyone who knows me knows I'm a total Ninerphile.

They only make 29er mtbs. Nothing else.

Their team captain has a beard longer then my arm and world single speed champs were won on a Niner (complete with 2 beer shortcuts!).

I like the brand. I like the cult status. I like the bikes. I like their attitude. Do their bikes makes me faster? Fooked if I know - there really isn't any way to measure it accurately...

I haven't actually seen the real 29" riders make the claim, "it makes you faster"

I think the PERCEPTION the S.A. public have of them being faster was brewed from the Super Cycling show.

I heard 29ers cause TB and famine in 3rd world countries... not sure if that's true though. Ask Daft Vader?!

but yeah... the only 29er I'd consider is this beauty:

At the risk of saturating this thread with Eldron posts here is my total "feeling" on 29er bikes versus 26 bikes:

Descending (smooth and rocky): 29er is better - feels more stable

Tight, twisties: 29er is worse - feels a bit more clumsy

Steep rocky climbs: 29er is better - the wheels seems to roll over the rocks rather than hang up on them

Smooth climbing: 29 is worse worse - it feels "heavier" and is about 700g heavier than a comparable 26" bike.

Long smooth flats: 29er is better - feels like my roadbike

My choice of mtb - 29er hardtail (Niner of course :D )

That is all - I'm 29erd out now...

Just seen this beauty (coulour scheme...) at Flandria here in Stellenbosch....must have my name on it.

It immediately caught my eye...

Chrome finish with everything else blue - seat = two tone blue / cable housing = blue...

Man!!! this just looks great!!

I'm not in the market for a Giant per se...not even a duallie...but heck, this colour scheme might actually just swing my vote??
