And if you were to ask these questions on a more international forum......do you think the answers would be any diffrent?

Yes the violence is much less or none at all. There is crime all over the world,it's just not as brutal as in SA.Here they ask you nicelly for your goods and if you say no they run away.

Stolen car, held at gun point for wallet, house brake etc, etc....?

Back home (Switzerland) 5 bikes were stolen from outside the train station.

This made front page of the local paper and the guys were caught within 2 days.

There will always be crime, but not to the extent we have here in SA and not as violent.

Off the top of my head, over the last 10 years or so:

A 9mm pointed in the eyeball during an armed robbery, a mugging, a pickpocketing, a house robbery (nobody home), a brick thrown at car in Mpumalanga, a campsite raided, and two attempted (but unsuccessful) car thefts - maybe amateurs, an attempted car hijacking with a smack on the head in the process ... list probably goes on!

Enough to put you on edge that's for sure!

Had a friend shot to death about 3 years ago in a hijacking.

Car radio stolen (door locks trashed and other damage to the car)

Had all 4 wheels stolen one night. Other damage to the car as a result.

Trailer with all my camping gear stolen 3 weeks ago. Tools taken at the same time.

Armed bank robbery at the branch I was working at just over a year ago.

These are the recent events. going back a bit, one house burglary while I was on a 2 month National Service Camp. Car broken into a week or two later.

Various petty thefts of cell phones and other small items.

A while back 702 radio host said "Almost all South Africans (residents) know someone directly who has been hijacked." I was not one of those stats until my friend was killed.

At about that time there was a spate of vehicle hijackings going n in the 'hood and several people were killed during that time. Many more were shot and wounded.

These are just the facts.

Had a friend in the UK whose house got broken into by (presumably) kids. they stole some alcohol and snowboarding equipment. This was her first experience with any sort of real crime and she was terribly upset.... here in gauteng if the victim of crime wasn't murdered/ raped/ tortured we count ourselves lucky.

so their answers would be the same "crime is rampant where I live" but the level of crime that they experience isn't comparable to RSA.

In SA:

1994 - Bfn - Got my bakkie stolen - Hilux, should have known (2 weeks before it was broken into and i found a make-shift key broken-off in the ignition)

1996 - Bfn - House I was looking after (did it as part-time job during student years) got broken into - caught the guy, he is probably still walking around with my shoe up his arse.

1997 - Bfn - Same as above, only stole small stuff

2003 - East London - House of friend I was staying in got broken in while I slept, they stole my clothing hanging on the bed-end. Police said they use some type of burning drug?

In Macedonia, Kosovo, Moscow and Zurich - stayed 4 years nothing happened. My bicycle practically slept outside in Kosovo during summer.

In Brazil - nothing yet to me personnaly (2,5 years), but 2 of my friends bike-jacked at gunpoint, Only this week in the city (Salvador) I live in and what I have seen: 2 days ago a guy got shot twice in front of the buidling I work at for BRL3k (+/- ZAR 12k), been the witness to 3 robberies from vehicles caught in traffic jams, 1 police man shot at the T-junction from my apartment, heard what sounded like a gun fight in the park my apartment overlooks last night - don´t know yet what happened, 3 employees in the office (36 in total) victims of bodily crime this week.

Two armed attacks at my office, 4 company bakkies stolen, my personal bakkie stolen, (okay I got it back but believe me the issues around that its best to leave it stolen), my house broken into twice in broad daylight nogal, various petty crime at my business.

Look, let me say if one chooses to live in SA, one needs to accept the fact that there is a very good chance at some stage you will have an attempt made on your's or one of your families lives - lets not beat around the bush, these are the realities.

Hense you need to be aware and take precautions, wondering around with a silly grin thinking it will never happen to you is naive and probably foolish - I feel very, very, strongly about this, I will not be intimidated and I take care of my own safety, see my sig. line.

If I or my family are threatened in any way, I WILL SHOOT FIRST, and call the cops later - they will only need to bring an empty peanut butter jar to carry the guy away.

1998...car radio stolen

1999...window smashed and cellphone grabbed. There is a happy ending to this story though...the thief was caught and I got my phone back.

2002...two okes grabbed my wallet and cellphone, tried to fight back, hit the one on his head somewhere (almost lights out) his partner stabbed me with knife in back. Luckily it was right on my scapula, so no punctured lungs or anything.

Since then...no problems.

Thanks for the reminder. I had the window of my car smashed out at 3 am. Nothing visible fot them to steal so perhpas they were after the faceless radio / cd player. The alarm was activated and I immediately switched on the outside lights. Thugs ran away with nothing.
