SARU Media Release

Doping Control Outcomes

Springboks Chiliboy Ralepelle and Bjorn Basson are returning home from South Africa’s tour of Britain and Ireland having returned positive samples for a banned stimulant following the Test against Ireland on November 6.

Six Nations Rugby Ltd – who administers the November internationals – informed the South African Rugby Union of the positive Tests on Sunday evening. As a result the pair are provisionally suspended from all rugby and will return to South Africa on Monday. Basson injured an ankle in Saturday’s win over Wales and was due to return anyway.

The players were randomly drawn for testing by anti-doping officials following the Test at the Aviva Stadium. The players have the right to request that their ‘B’ sample be tested.

The pair returned an adverse analytical finding for methylhexaneamine, a “non-specified stimulant” on the prohibited substances list of the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). It is scheduled to be re-classified as a “specified stimulant” from 1 January 2011.

Well Im so glad that Chilli Willy Boy is gone. It is a disrespect to SA rugby to have that tool in the bok team. If he is the second best hooker in the country Ill eat my Fizik Saddle! There are far better players than him.

woah, that's really bad news.

Chilliboy has had enough time to get bored on the bench and try other ways to get into the team, the tag of 'future springbok captain' can go now.

but WTF was Basson thinking? wonder if he was on it all season, or some new tricks he learnt on tour

_______________comment on keo.co.za:

It was a stimulant, not a steroid. It was also one that’s a common ingredient in nasal sprays, which I can imagine a South African needing in the UK in November.Having said that, it’s still a banned substance, whether they were taking it unintentionally in an over-the-counter cold remedy, or deliberately using it for stimulant effect. If they were doping, they deserve a ban; and if it was an accidental use, the coaching staff need to be a lot more careful what medicines people are taking.

Hopefully Chili gets banned for life and Basson"s B-sample comes back negative...

Surely Chili knows he is not in that position based on merit, the substance is only him trying to keep up.

*Please note - comment based on form / ability and the fact that there are better hookers (incl. non-whites...) who deserve the spot far more than someone earmarked in Std. 2 and forced into the position....

It's amazing that there aren't more positives.

But then again, how often are they tested?

Not as much as sports such as cycling but are tested quite regular, both in and out of season.
