Here are the links for the Merida and the Silverback - How do the specs compare? (The prices are similar)

Does anyone know the weight of the Merida?

There are so many lekka bikes to buy in the classifieds, why buy a silverback.....when you can get a Morewood Zula, Specialized Stumpjumper, Ibis Mojo or Santacruz Blur - all better bikes in my opinion.

The big thing for me is once you have a good frame you can upgrade components as and when you are able too.

And you base your opinion on...experience of riding ALL of these bikes...including the Silverback?? Just asking... ;)

I have owned a Silverback Mercury 1, Santacruz Chameleon, Specialized Stumpjumper and now a Morewood Zula. So i think i have a fair idea. The Mojo and Blur i have ridden and like....anything else?

Here are a few examples and i am sure they are ALL negotiable:

Ibis Mojo

Morewood Zula

Specialized Stumpjumper

Or you could just get a 29'er:

Het die FOCUS reeks by die Argus expo gesien. Die Super Bud 2 lyk na 'n wenner vir R 23000 of Scott Spark 35, dan kry jy nog carbon ook en hy is R 25000.

Look at the Scott Spark 40. Similarly spec'd to the Silverback (lighter and better frame) and you might be able to pick one up for around R19,000 if you shop around.

It also has the twinloc system that locks out both shocks with one handlebar mounted lever - works very well.

RRP on the Spark 40 is R19700 odd so you can get it at some shops for about R18500. Much better buy than the Mercury

The spec of the Mercury 1 is higher than the Scott all round

I don't have an MTB at the moment, I will wait till I see something I like at a good price.

I bought my Mercury 2 with Mercury 1's front shock (reba team) and wheelset (mavic crosstrail) as swap-outs 2.5 years ago. Did 2 Sabie experiences 1 Cape Epic 1 Mankele 3 towers and myriad other races - 8000km+ total. Good stuff that! The suspension parts squeak a bit, but most bikes do. The geometry is nice - I set it racy low handles - still confident over rough terrain.

My buying decision at the time was the spec / buck ratio - the Mercury was top then.
