Jy maak nie sin nie ?

Anyway it looks like the normal michelin xc dry 2 - quite light tyre ?

Stans kit should sort you out easy enough, just make sure she can get the tyre on and off the rim herself, voor iemand haar weer "help" en `n schraeder valve in n presta rim in forseer...

These are Michelins. R340. UST. 685g. It's called the XCR dry. So I can assume it will be crap in the wet. But then again, the wife does not do riding in the wet.

As I was looking around, I realised there are a crap load of choices. What I want to know is why not a non-UST tyre on a UST rim? It is lighter and cheaper. Yeah, there is the sidewall thing, but you now get non-UST tyres with a slightly thicker sidewall.

Any of you running non-UST on UST rims?

Ek weet nou nog nie hoe de hel hy dit reggekry het...Seker maar geweld.

I experimented with non-UST tubeless...and three sidewalls later I gave up. Also, the non UST lose pressure fast (say over a week) so you are always pumping them. The only thing I dislike about UST is that are a real pain to put on.

I stood in the store and had a UST and non-UST and I could not tell the difference between the sidewalls.

The two extreems would be Maxxis with L.U.S.T and then something like the Kenda Karma non-UST - you can see the difference in sidewall thickness!

yep, running non UST maxxis minions and highrollers on Deemax rims. Works pretty well and holds pressure for a long time. Not sure what the attraction of UST specific tyres would be if the non-UST tyres work just as well while only requiring a bit more Stans.

wondering if it makes less of a difference with DH vs XC tires as DH casings have naturally thicker walls, or so I presume.

I use Schalbe's (Rocket Ron's - Racing Ralph) and the difference is noticable. Additionally, all UST tires weigh more than Non-UST - the difference in weight is the sidewall rubber.

I can't speak for other brands.

Being a weight weenie and a Stans fanboy, I obviously dont like UST tyres - heavy, expensive and non-flexible sidewalls.

I prefer a normal foldable tyre on a stans BST rim. So do take that into account when reading this.

That said, my training wheels have UST tyres - bombproof so I can just ride and not bother with spares or checking pressure with each ride.

MJ - knowing your wife, she is quite petite, so I would recommend a normal foldable tyre converted to tubeless on her current rims. She is light and I'm sure she doesn't bomb down hills and through rocks all the time so the thick sidewall will be overkill. Also the extra weight won't be to her liking either. Also the UST bead is very tight on a normal rim, so it;s nigh impossible mounting/removing a tyre in the field.

On the other hand (Naas :P ) UST loses less air so less pressure checks and it is stronger sidewall wise so as long as she has sealant in the tyre she shouldnt have issues, she would just need to carry plugs to seal bigger holes in the tread that sealant cant, as she wouldnt be able to put a tube in.

Regarding normal tyre on a UST rim - Im unsure if the tyre would mount well on a UST rim, but then you have a light tyre with messing with rim strips that can perrish. If you puncture just remove the valve and pop a tube in. Thats why I like stans rims - light rim (lighter than ust) and just use tape and a valve with a normal tyre, no rimstrips, just remove the valve if you puncture. UST tyres also mount/remove no issues on them.

I have a GEAX UST on a DT Swiss rim and it too looses air. I have to pump it once a week.

Yeah it will, as it does not seal as intended. Air seeps out the rim/bead area and spoke holes. Thats why the ust tyres have a strong bead - to seal airtight onto the UST rim and also no air escapes from the thick sidewalls while the rim has no spoke holes to let air out either.

eish i have Maxxis none-UST tires on my Mavic SLR UST wheels.. the front tyre has climbed off the rim or fast cornering twice leaving me crashing into the ground...

wheels pumped hard.. i have now bought a UST tire for the front wheel with hopes the thicker sidewall will stick better...

will use none UST at tha back for there is less danger..

im **** scared at the moment going hard into a corner... hopefully the UST tire will sort it out.

WRT to the Schwables (Rons and Ralphs) are they both available in UST, I seem to recall the Rons being only Non UST...?

There are a couple of factors to consider

Firstly and most importantly What does your wife want from her rides/races

If she is front of the pack looking for every second then lighweight non ust tryres and the risks that go with them plus the ability to deal with cut sidewalls and changing tubes etc whilst covered in sealant ete etc will be her choice.

If she wants trouble free rides with no hassles a decent set of UST tyres with stans will mean she will prob never have to fix a puncture or walk ..ever (this would be my choice for my wife I am quite happy to sacrifice 150 grams to know she is riding a bullet proof set up.

Fit something like wtb weirwolfs and forget about her :D

Plus if she actually did puncture its very easy and quick to put a plug in
