Hi

I am keen to get together a small group of riders for morning rides on Table Mountain starting from Rhodes Memorial. 60-90 min rides two or three times a week at around 6:30/7am at a faster-than-leisurely pace.

Reply to this post if you are interested. Times and days of the week are completely flexible and with enough interest we can tailor to suit.

Thanks

Why dont you just give you bike to the first thug in the street it will save them having to mug you for yours on that side of the mountain.

Sorry Covie, I disagree.

Group rides is the only way to "take the mountain back" from the thugs. Staying away completely from this area will not solve the problem. We have to crowd the bad element out in order to make it safe. That is, among other things, why Tokai is safe and other areas not.

From the authorities' point of view, SANParks should also simply start asking money at Rhodes Memorial or get people to buy a Wild Card. Control solves some problems, whether we like the idea or not.

The Police have repeatedly promised to patrol this area and have done so very successfully, but after a few months with no incidents, they seem to lose interest or they concentrate on more pressing matters. Soon thereafter, the muggers are back.

One possible new roleplayer that may help is the Groote Schuur Improvement District, funded partly by UCT. That is, if they can be convinced to take this part of the mountain under their wing, so to speak.

Methinks, the long term solution is for more mtbikers to use Rhodes in larger groups. More good people on the mountain, more eyes and ears, will soon make the criminals feel unwelcome. They will move back the concrete jungle where there are easier pickings, sorry roadies.

Unfortunately I cannot join yout early morning rides, I start work too early and have to ride in the afternoons. Good luck with getting a decent group together.

thats a very novel idea DJR, but unless you ride aremed with a Firearm, I am afraid when someone sticks a gun in your face you are minus your bike no matter if there are 50 of you in the group.

Just look at what happend up country, they mugged 5 motocross guys, then a hour later they mugged 7 cyclists on the same bloody road. Why, they have a gun you do not.

I agree its pitty and its shamefull that the guvment are too useless to do anything about this scenario. But there are many people that do not know that Rhodes mem is a hotspot, and the idea is not to spoil his ride, its to make people aware of the potential danger in that area.

If they are willing to risk it by going that route then  they have balls, I personally wont. I mean there were muggings there this week again.

thank you for the replies. I have been riding between Rhodes Mem and Table Mountain Road for over a year and haven't had any problems. My interest for a group was company not safety, but thank you for pointing out the risks.

Again, i am 100% flexible at this stage with regards to time and day of the week, so if anyone else is interested to join, please reply.

Uhmm, what are two thugs going to do with 50 bikes?

And muggings take place in Majik as well.

Nomis, I'd be keen on afternoon rides whenever I can join. Unfortunately we don't have showers at work so riding before work is not really an option.

nomis, I'm really looking forward to riding with you guys, but next week I'm tapering for the Attakwas. The week thereafter should be good.
