I'm searching for racing wheels.

Would you recommend buying 2nd hand wheels?

OR

Is it just betta to go for new?

Thoughts,Views, Experiences, Stories - please bring it on, Rider?

Hi

I bought my American Classics sencond hand and have no issues with them they are great wheels and I think they are best bang for thr buck, they are very light think abot 1400grams for both wheels.

Having said that I was also looking at all the newer wheels but instead of upgrading I bought a cheap set of mavic wheels which add about 1kg to my bike I ride these now everyday and change to the classics for races.

Whats your budget?

Also speak to Desmond, he has loads of sets of wheels all the good stuff also and I am sure he looks after his stuff.

I'll check in with Desmondalie too, alongside my other source through a chommie.

That is where atraut also sourced his impressive hoopsc- with Desmond.

I have a pair of Ksyrium SL's if you're interested. New bearings - less than 300km on them, and averything straight, new and true.

Other than that, don't buy the kit, buy the seller. If the seller has a good reputation, or at least fakes well, go right ahead. If a seller seems dodgy, walk away.

Post some pics and the price, bladed spokes?

I am looking for substantially less weight, Bikemonster.

Single criteria.

Laaik 1.2 kg or less. This is tubular world, it seems.

My Cane Creeks come in at 1.7 kg for the set.

Otherwise, good tip RE "buy the seller".

The problem comes in when guys advertise wheels as "brand new" (this has been debated hugely on the hub), and to the uninitiated the wheels look good on the pics - but to us who have been around a while we know wheels model names etc - and then you see the wheels are at least 3/4 years old... ja - I wana see how the dude has used it for one race only...

So be careful, do a bit of a nag with questions... and no you don't get a warrantee with your second hand hoops (not that you would always need it - but it's ncie to know that if needs be you have the warrantee in place)...

just my 2.51 cents :)

IMO.....go for new (where you have a warranty) unless you personally are friends with the person you are buying 2nd hand from and can kill them if they rip you off ;) :D :D

Stay away from carbon deep sections intially (IMO a waste of time here in the Cape, especially in Summer PPA/League races) and go for something like the EA 90 SLX's....all round use, bullet proof, ;light & good value.

Bought many 2nd hand wheelsets without a problem, but try find something that is genuinely nearly new... On carbon wheelsets you should get some idea of whether the seller is telling the truth from the wear on the braking surface at least (if they've been used once or twice then there should be virtually no wear at all). The fact that you're considering 2nd hand means budget is a concern and if you wait a while you'll find great condition wheels used very little for anywhere up to half the new price which just seems to be the best option to me (you throw away a lot of money by buying new)...

I have a set of EC90SLX's which might be something you would consider, but want to use them a little over the next month or 2 before selling (I only bought them in the past few days and haven't ridden them yet). They came off a show bike so don't appear to have been ridden at all yet... I might also have a great set of deep sections with a similar situation, but that's a secret for now and will only be on the market if I can bring myself to part with them!

Thanx for your honest view, Edge D...

Are these tubular?

Weight estimation for both?

Thanx for your comment.

Thanx, headhunter...

Me was thinking of at least a 38 mm deep sections. Just a lil' aero profile.
