Hubbers some help please!

As a newbie to The Hub and Mtb'ing some info will be appreciated:

- Presta valves or Schrader valves

- is the rim significantly weakened by drilling a presta valve hole to accommodate a schrader valve?

- handle bar ends or not?

- tyres that have wide as possible riding conditions i.e. mud, rocks, etc. and that is suitable for ghetto set-up tubeless system

Welcome!

ok so here's my input (but a lot of this is a matter of opinion).

1. Schrader. Less fuss. Can be pumped at the garage without silly adapter.

2. all my rims fit Schrader (but they're wide heavy duty rims), although I have seen some that require one to remove a little plastic insert from the hole in order to accomodate a schrader. You sure drilling is really necessary? Sometimes it's just a tight fit. If it does need to be drilled, I'm not sure on how much it will compromise the strength.

3. I ride Downhill and Freeride bikes. Bar ends are a no-no. But for cross country riding they'll help. The serious riders have a rule that bar ends should not be used with riser bars as it looks rediculous.

4. Tyres... I've heard many good things about Continental Mountain Kings. Very versatile. Not sure about the ghetto tubeless compatibility though

Hope my 2c worth helps a bit

In my opinion.

Presta Valves (doesnt clog up in mean muddy conditions)

No it shouldnt weaken the rim

Riser bar no bar ends ever.

Flat bar bar ends for sure

The Ghetto setup is done with standard non ust tyres but I would go for a tyre like conti mountain and race king tubleless version.

I have taught them well. My job here is done. Student now becomes the master.

Who figured this?

Its all a matter of personal preference and comfort, you like bar ends use them you don't like them don't use them. I dig my bar ends on my riser bars, very comfy for long rides.

1. Presta - you can get a schrader/presta value converter thats screws over the presta valve so you can use either/or.

2. i wouldn't mess with a rim by drilling it

3. i've answered this

4. i use a race king 2.2 tubeless back and a mountain king 2.2 tubeless front - good for most conditions. Most wheelsets can be converted to tubeless using stans kit.

Work for me too. Are you riding for fashion or comfort?
