Hi there!

Does anyone know how to calculate your maximum heartrate quite accurately WITHOUT going for those tests?

off Polar website:

Maximum heart rate, HRmax, is the highest number of heart beats per minute (bpm) an individual can achieve in an all-out effort. It is unique to the individual due to age, heredity, and fitness level. HRmax is a useful tool in determining training intensities, which are usually expressed as percentages of HRmax.

The first step in knowing the right intensity for your training is to find out your maximum heart rate, HRmax. The commonly used age-based calculation method uses the formula, 220 minus your age, for example, a 30 year old’s maximum heart rate would be, 220 - 30 = 190. The age-based method provides an average statistical prediction of your HRmax and is a good method for the majority of people, especially those new to heart rate training, to determine their maximum heart rate.

For those interested in a more individual specific calculation such as people who have been physically fit for many years or older people just beginning an exercise program Polar offers various models of training computers with unique features that determine a user’s individual maximum heart rate using the Polar Fitness Test. In the Polar Fitness Test the users resting heart rate, heart rate variability at rest, age, gender, height, body weight, and maximal oxygen uptake, i.e. VO2 max, are combined to calculate HRmax-p. The HRmax-p in Polar training computers gives the user the opportunity to determine and understand their unique maximum heart rate without performing an exhaustive maximal stress test.

Lastly, the most precise and accurate way of determining your individual maximum heart rate is to have it clinically tested by a cardiologist or exercise physiologist through the use of a treadmill or bicycle maximal stress test. If you are over the age of 40, overweight, have been sedentary for several years, or have a history of heart diseases in your family, clinical testing is recommended.

I've had an issue with figuring out my max HR as well. 220-46 =174 is the simplistic calculation for me. But I can get to that under a hard effort quite regularly. I've been told that there is no way that I could truly hit my max while riding hard up Chap/Peak as an example. So I just adjusted my Max up on my Polar until it sort of corresponded with my perceived effort. Whenever I see it hit 100% I adjust it up. I hit 101% last Saturday while chasing some riders up Chapmans and I felt absolutely fine. I've been using 182 so I'm going to raise it.

I should probably go for the proper test. But apparently its not a fun process

My max heartrate is 201 according to polar fitness test. Simple calculation: 220-16=204. I have hit 102% with 201 bpm. Does anyone know how much these clinical tests cost? And where can I have it tested in Stellenbosch?

find urself a 200m hill and slap on ur running shoes

Blast it up 5 times as hard as you can go and remember the max reading. That is your max heart rate.

The formula was originally desinged for people recovering from heart surgery and is nothing more than a guide. Everyone is different so one cannot use a formula.

1. Put on heart rate monitor.

2. Run around sports field until you callapse.

3. Check monitor for highest rate achieved.

And I won't even charge for this... :)

Do a warm up run for 2km to 3km that bring you to the bottom of a hill. As you climb the hill run faster and faster until you hit oxygen debt( ie getting faint in the head) Thats about near as you will get to max. WARNING , not fun at all!

Dont have to GO for the test, just DO it yourself.

I've gone for a VO2max test where you also determine you max heartrate and it wasn't as bad as I thought it would be. I think the reason for it is because they gradually raise the intensity up to you max. So it's not like you have to go falt out from the get go.

BUT IT DOES KILL YOU LEGS!!!!

Max heart rate cannot be calculated accurately. Period!

You need to conduct a test.
