Sure the roads will be fine by then...

Let's see the comments from the Freedom Challenge riders, the first guys should be passing through the Baviaans today! This is an adventure, I knew I was mad when I signed up for 230km this just extends us a bit further. My 16 hours may start to look like a dash for the line in under 24 hours. Hopefully organisers will break their silence on it.

Planning an 80km tomorrow with a 100km ride on Sunday to get the legs into shape.

I have heard rumours the event might be cancelled, any truth in this?

Eastern Cape Parks management had a regional meeting in Patensie yesterday. We will probably have some clarity on this event this coming week. Lets just hope that the road repairs are not going to go through some lengthy tendering process...

My 2c worth is that I don't think that it will be cancelled.

From the Freedom Challenge website today: "Everest conquerer Alex Harris has now emerged as the clear race leader and looks set to arrive at the finish on Tuesday morning, well within the existing race record of 13 days and 17 hours. However, there was a time when Harris’s progress looked to have slowed. On Thursday night he descended down the Osseberg track into the Baviaanskloof Wilderness Area. Ahead of him lay 12 crossings of the swollen Groot Rivier near the settlement of Cambria. It took Harris 6 hours to cover 10 kilometers in darkness. Walls of thorny acacias, washed downstream in the recent rains and clogged up the approaches to each of the crossings. His comment afterwards “Bavianskloof flooded and trashed! Madness...I gazed into Mordor! Took a beating but mind strong.”"

I guess this means the Nissan Lavina we arranged for our seconds is out down the river. Hell never mind a hire car is better than any 4x4.

Hi Everyone,

Please note: The Trans Baviaans will take place this year

The road through the Baviaanskloof will be closed till after the event, due to the road conditions......The 20 permitted support vehicles MUST be 4 x 4 - Riders that are permitted to take vehicles through the kloof, might want to reconsider, as the event organizers will not tolerate vehicles that get stuck thus holding up the riders!)

The road will be fully accessible for the riders!

Can't wait to see you there!!

'Bad' road conditions will only add to the challenge, although I hope some of the debris is cleared up as per Alex Harris' post...

Can't wait, just 6 weeks to go!!!
