Hi Everyone,

I'm going to be disassembling my bike to take it in a bike case, what is the best way to mark your seat post, etc to get it back to or close enough to correct setup?

Also, how do CO2 cartridges fare on trans atlantic flights?

Thanks!

I took CO2 bombs once with me, in my hand luggage and they asked me to remove it after my backpack went through the scanner.

Now I just buy new bombs wherever I go. At the moment I have two CO2 bombs at a friends house in each major city in SA.

They also ask you deflate your wheels slightly.

i was told by 1time before my last Argus that i cannot take CO2 bombs at all...have to buy when i get to destination.

When i flew with 1Time to IM70.3 last week, they told me that my CO2 canisters can't be in my hand luggage, so i put it in my suitcase with them watching - no problems... but you are limited to only 2 as far as i know...

Maybe on the safe side I should just get new canisters in SA when I get there. They're so strict about luggage and stuff here that I don't want them searching through all my things just because they saw 2 suspicious looking cylinders on the x-ray.

On a side note, just be careful on the roads in CT in a couple of weeks, I've been known to drive on the right side of the road when I first get there!

Don't take CO2 canisters on a plane. Not in your hand luggage nor check-in luggage. They scan the luggage and if they pick up the canisters, chances are they won't put it on the plane and you'll only find out when you arrive at your destination. A friend of mine realised this after he checked in his luggage with the canisters and when they found his bag, it has already been removed from the luggage to go on the plane. Rather don't take the chance.

I use a red permanent marking pen and draw a line around the seat post just above the seat tube. This works well as it can also be seen while riding which is handy if you have ever had that “suspicious sinking” feeling while riding some seriously steep hill….

If you slide your seat post down into the tube during transport just be careful the marking does not rub off. Allthough sliding it down is not recommended as it can scratch the seat post on the portion that usually protrudes above the seat tube.

Thanks, that sounds like a pretty good idea too!

I'm getting one of these cases and from my understanding I need to remove the seat post for it to fit properly: http://www.performancebike.com/bikes/Product_10052_10551_1023912_-1_1553000_20000_400174

dude Co2 are so cheap, rather not take the chance, deflate wheels too

Exactly, I have co2 bombs at my parents in pta, 2 at a friend in jhb, 2 at my uncle in CT and 2 at a friend in Durban, so I don't need to fly with them at all.

Co2 canisters are not allowed but Ive always kept them in my bike box that is too big for them to scan and never had a problem.

Better than marking your seatpost just measure from top of saddle to centre of pedal axle in downward position. This way you can adjust any bike quickly to your exact measurement.
