Something occurred to my while riding the other day- the chain always hits the gears on the same side.... would it help to turn the chain around every now and then to even things out?

Nope.

The wear on the rollers is always on the entire roller and not just one side, also wear on the rollers is of no importance as it has no effect on chain wear.

Even the pins (the part of the chain where wear is what is important) wears evenly as the chain goes through 720 degree turns with each revolution.

Just keep the chain clean, correctly lubed and check the wear religiously.

Yep, check it often ! I put on an XTR chain May last year and it's totally kaput, can't even measure it with the chain checker. I'm shocked, didn't ride much at all and I clean/lube with every ride :o

Is it true what they say about rather change the chain more often as it prevents wear on all other items?.

I believe that the more expensive lighter chains are thinner and softer and hence wear more quickly ?

cheers

This would be correct. You should go through about three chains per cassette if memory serves me correct and if you do it right.

Thats because what you save in weight will cost you in $!

XT/XTR chains are too soft and wear out much quicker.

My record is six chains to 1 cassette and front drive.

I ran 3 chains on rotation, and replaced the most worn one with a new one and was on the sixth chain when the drivechain expired. Shimano XT 9 speed narrows with quicklink.

Well you should always replace a chain before the chain wear exceed 0.7% and not wait for 1%. Time is no indication how when as various factors influence chain wear. I've had one chain last me 700km (3mths) and was worn to over 1% - more like 10%, then I got my current chain 6mths (2000km) that is till very happy.

Very true as agreed by other Hubbers. Personally that is why I'm still on 8spd - cheaper chains & more durable.
