Whats with the case of the pro teams not providing for medical aid packages for their riders.

Heard a bird whistle this weekend that Ryans team would not help with his medical costs, when he had his op.

What packages do the teams offer or are the riders left up to themselves, for medical.   This is a topic for discussion, please do not hijack.

I would like to know as my son is thinking of signing with a team( well a team was seen talking to him at the Satellite), and would like to know what they provide and what do i provide.  What do the top teams provide???

Can more be done for the teams, what do the riders think and what do the teams think

Great day

it's up to riders themselves..they trying since ryan's death to get medical aid compulsary when signing with a new team, but thats up to the riders...if your under 23  you can go on their parents medical aid..but when over 23 its a problem.

I agree the team should cover medical aid and not the riders..as it is the riders risking their bodies for their teams

What's the idea, and what happens when you fall and break something like Malcolm's Collar bone.  Does he still get paid or is it no ride no pay?????

As you said RH the riders are putting their bodies on the line for the team and the sponsors, but the sponsors aren't really looking after the riders if theyr'e not providing SOME sort of medical aid.

Is this just my perception or am I wrong

It should be part of a contract for a team to provide medical aid.Imagine signing for a rugby team and they say medically you are on your own. I don't think so.

Mark, if I am mistaken, it's in a clause in the contract, that they will fott the bill.   This is in any case part of the sponsorship deal.  Why can't Telemed or Bestmed or whoever come on board and say" lets give the cyclists a medical aid as part of the signed contract".  to the company it is then part of the tax deductions and the cyclist knows he is covered

A win win situation

ConfusedThis issue was discussed at length a few months back on this forum. It was generally concluded that it is very much up to the individual rider to insure himself against major medical bills. i.e. to take out a hospital plan. The higher level team's maintain that salaries paid are (theoretically) inclusive of a sufficient amount for the cyclist to take out his own insurance.

Typically, Barloworld's policy appears to be that they cover the direct medical costs of accidents occuring during a race and that was all.

Looking at the serious accidents that can happen, the latest being JL's broken femur, to race without medical insurance would be plain stupid. An accident of his nature can easily run up a medical account of R40 000 in SA - much more in a European hospital!

So if in any doubt, take out a hospital plan type insurance then debate the issues with the team management!

My job betaal nie my mediese fonds nie.

sam, contact a few medical aids and find out.  I know that most have an exclusion (whether on as a dependant or not) of pro sports people.  Would probably be best.

No, against the for law for medical funds to discriminate like that. The worst they are allowed to do is exclude a excisting medical condition for maximum of 12 months.

Eg. If you have HIV and only then join a medical fund they may exclude treatment for 12 months but after that you are fully covered. Thats why medical aid is so expensive. Adverse selection and cross-subsidie.
