was thinking - saw on converter website that 1kcal = 4.184kj ... would this be right? i trained yesterday and lost a total of 969Kcal (polar) then i lost 4050kj ??? my current diet allows me 3725kj per day _ then i have lost more that what i ate? (good thing for weightloss) ... could this be right???

your diet alows you 3725kj per day I assume you sould say kcal per day.

Typical calorie (kcal) averages for men and women:

For maintaining weight (TDEE):

Men (average): 2700-2900

Women (average): 2000-2100

For losing weight:

Men (average): 2200-2700

Women (average): 1400-1800

For gaining weight:

Men (average): 3200-4000+

Women (average): 2200-2500+

There are two ways to measure energy spent/used. Calories or Kilojules - 1 kcal = 4050kj. Most people refer to calories, when in actual fact it is Kilocalories - kcal. Your Polar is in fact reading Kcal and your diet allows you 3725kcal per day - if you were only allowed 3725 kilojules, you would starve to death. Remember that when riding, you will still be eating and drinking, so dont think that after your ride you have used 969kcal and this needs to be replaced. This measurement does not take into account what you have eaten before or during your ride.

Ok, so i'm very confused here.

This morning I went to gym and in my seesion i burnt 1085kcal (according to my polar) (run, ride, and weights) which is 1085000 calories, which is 4541.593 kj.

Now, I belive the RDA calories for a male is 2500? I believe from what I've read the RDA KJ is 7000

So Today I burnt 1085000 calories (if those calculations are to be beleived) meaning that i have a deficit of 1082500 or 4531kj still availible over and above the RDA, which ties back to the KJ burnt.

SO I've learnt that 1kcal does not eqaul 1 calorie, but 1000 (name suggests it doesnt it)

Interesting

You're confusing kCalories and Calories. 1kCal = 1,000Cal = +- 4,180J = 4.18kJ. But most people use the term Calories instead of meaning kCalories (as you've said).

Using your example - RDA kCalories for a male is 2,500kC x 4.18 = 10,450kJ. Don't know why you convert kC into C then into J then back into kJ? Thus, for a normal male you used 2,500kC + 1,085kC = 3,585kC.

I think that's right. Or I might get verbally slapped just now...

Can't think that 3,725kJ can be right. What would you typically eat during one day?

Here are a few examples of approximate kJ contents:

1 slice brown bread = 333kJ

1 weetbix = 361kJ

1 boiled egg = 331kJ

1 apple = 368kJ

1 orange = 355kJ

500ml energade = 600kJ

You Sure about the Energade?

That is

90g Jungle Crunch Muesli - 348

100g fat free yoghurt - 43

I tin Tuna in brine - 91

40g Kraft Miracle Light mayonaise - 63

1x avocado (175g excluding seed and skin) - 280

150ml fat free milk - 52

= 900 kCal / 3725 kj

Lucky for me I eat 400 kCal more than that :)

To be more precise: Energade Sports Drink: 1 Container (500ml), Calories: 135, Fat: 0g, Carbs: 33g, Protein: 0g (kC 135 x 4.18 = 564kJ)
