To be a home mechanic all you need is one shifting spanner, (or bicycle minitool) , much force, equla amount of patience and a very happy LBS in walking distance to repair the damage you do.

Alternatively,

At one stage there was a comprehensive bicycle repair manual online (I did down load it) (park tools has published the blue book as well)

or Mr Bornman of yellow saddles give a good bicycle repair course and wheel building course, so does cycle lab.

Working at a bike shop for about 6 months also equips you with a lot of the basic knowledge.

Remember lesons learnt slowly on other peoples bikes are invaluable, and cheaper than lessons learnt fast on your own.

Start small, like chain removal and replace.  Then cluster removal, true a wheel, ext ext ext.

Leave the tough stuff (and irrepairable),  like shimming a BB bracket for the experts

Setting gears is simple,  but as Clausewitz was apt to say "in war even the most simple thing is difficult".

however, setting gears with campy is a lot easier than a sludge filled Shimano MTB group set.  I am led to believe (by some MTB riders) that SRAM MTB groupos are as easy to dial in as campy road groupos.

Start by striping the spokes from your wheels the day before a race. You'll be amazed how quickly you master the art of wheel building.
