Guys don't lose focus here !

It DOES NOT matter whether it is a Barry, David, Roger, Lionel, Kobus, Greg, Clive, Hendrik, Louis, Shane e.t.c. that is responsible for the mess !

What is important is that CSA and/or ECC step forward to take ownership of the problem and accept accountability ........... the 4 min odd video clip of Barry Austin on day three blowing bubbles up everyone's ar{:content:}amp;s by "replacing" officials with team managers does not cut it !

Also does CSA officials REALLY not get paid ?

Just asking, because the financial statements on CSA website show that at 31/8/2010 Year To Date Licensing Income amounted to R 3 mill and Salaries of approx R 800 000 is shown as expense.

Also see under expenses a few K spent on Legal Costs, so maybe a legal challenge is not such a far fetched idea ?

stop picking up stompies and stop talking ***

@ Napalm, thanks for clarifying re CSA salaries.

@ Fandacious - having a rough day ? This post is not about Hendrik Lemmer and no one even mentioned Hendrik Lemmer until @Zabel made a comment about him having to pay back his salary - it has now been explained that he does not get one !

One would think that he will as CSA Road volunteer have to try and sort out the mess, but that does not mean that it was caused by him or that he is necessarily responsible.

Were you in PE for the Road Champs ? Did you ride and enjoy it ? Was the roads OK and safe ?

C'mon, give us ole vets the benefit of your input.

Ok, so on saturday the elites race was meant to start 7am. PE traffic knew this for 4months before the time. Yet, come saturday morning, the cops told the organizers - sorry - we only work from 8am-4pm. The organizers then decided that the race would be delayed till 8am, because that was the safest option. If they didnt do this, there would be no road closure.

In your expert opinion, how is that CSA's fault, and how could they have handled it any better?

I have absolutely no problem with Saturdays minimal delay and never said it was CSA's fault - how sure are you that PE traffic knew about it 4 months ago ?

As it turned out the Saturday elite and under 23 races were the only problem free ones, because by then the team managers had stepped in to control safety and were all following their riders. CSA had also instructed officials to relax certain rules and use a bit of discretion e.g. 10% lap rule. Also the traffic early Saturday morning was non existent compared to that experienced over the weekdays on Thursday and Friday. Despite this it was not 100% full road closure though.

In my expert opinion the refusal to work at 7.00 had more to do with the outrageous amount of money the Metro authorities wanted from the organisers, than with working hours - barely 24 hours later the Volkswagen Herald race had road closures in some areas as early as 5.30 a.m. - same cops, same city.

Which brings me to the point I made all along i.e. that most if not all of the drama could have been avoided with a more sensible recommended route choice.

I don't necessarily expect to get my money back, as I know this is a far cry. But some recourse from CSA and maybe some more respect to us oldies (and I'm a youngster amongst us) would be nice. We aren't pros, but our sport is just as important to us as the pros, and I take a lot of pride in being able to compete against the top 13 Vets ladies in the 30 - 39 age category in the country. CSA has basically just given us a slap in the face and told us in not so many words, that we aren't considered important enough to make sure our event is as good as the pro event.

I don't have any children of my own, but surely this country's future cyclists will be coming from the Vets groups, since they will be the ones encouraging their children to compete and race. If this is how the vets are treated, is this not perhaps why there are so few (especially female) youngsters coming forward?

At the TT prize giving on Wednesday one of the announcers explained how the number of medals work in relation to the number of participants. And his statement was that we should encourage more of our friends to come, then we can get more medals. I encourage a friend of mine to come do her first SAs in the 40+ category - I was ashamed that I invited her, and I will be ashamed to invite anyone again.

Cockups come down to poor planning, poor management and the net result, crappy execution. The organisers have to take responsibility, absolutely regardless of whether they are nice guys with good intentions, earning a salary or not earning a salary.

Ultimately it was a cockup - a shameful delivery for the entrants, each with lots of hours in the saddle, family and leisure time sacrificed and money spent on this event.

I for one hope that those who are looking for compensation get a satisfactory outcome. I intend to ride SA's next year and if I feel that one cent of my money or one minute of my time was wasted preparing for it I will absolutely go spare in every forum and communication channel available to me.
