And as for mixing tandems with singles - just dumb. the singles end with an over-inflated opinion of their race, after wheelsucking behind the faster tandems. No wonder the A's were into the C4's so quick. winning time for AL was 1min something faster than C2? I wonder what the AL time would have been without the tandem assistance?

Tandems should start right after the C1...

Like Trubie I got stuck at the back of the ALs on the line. I did not manage to rejoin the main group but the smallish bunch I was in (mixed with tandems) had a safe ride all the way, finishing in just over three hours.

I was in this same bunch . . . Really enjoyed this group of riders. No real problems and good pace. Thanks

If they hand out R200 notes for free, will you join the line or not? I was in the middle of the bunch and it was scary, but if the gus in front sucked wheel good for them.

Started in A bunch with racing tandems , what where the organizers thinking ???

Bunch was way to big and very fast :) and dangerous :(

Apparently at the finish there was talk of DSQ the whole bunch for dangerous riding :( I mean come on you the organizers put us all together not our fault the roads are soo narrow :(

We caught some Cat 4 riders after 25kms it was chaos.

I am just happy to have finished in one piece with a great time as a bonus.

"A" group was shocking, it's not just the C4's we caught but there where a number of guys riding with no numbers and no chips in the group, (two from Edenvale Pedlars and one with a Hills(Dog food) Shirt on. They nearly caused a crash when they pulled of to the side of the rode at one of the intersections.

Spoke to Hendrik from CSA @ 09h00 regarding the C4/ tandem issue. It seems this incident was a learning curve for all concerned in terms of planning, etc. He says a vehicle should have neutralised C4 and then disqualified anyone who "jumped the line" once the tandems passed. I think it is the 1st time that a situation called for such action, but it was not performed possibly due to the fact that the marshalls have not encountered something like this under the old seeding system. Therefore, to all the decent-minded C4 riders who fell prey to a few hooligans and planning absence: send your comments and motivation as to why the blanket disqualification must be overturned, to Hendrik via email (hpwagener@vodamail.co.za). CSA has a meeting in 2 weeks time to bring this issue to some level of resolve.

I rode tandem with my wife in AL. We arrived late and luckily missed the big crazy group. We had an awesome day. Did 3h11 instead of last years 3h46! Only problem was when BL passed as after Heidelberg that the singles kept on cutting in front of us after they passed. Had to give 2 or 3 riders a little push on the butt.

I think I lost about 500km worth of rubber on the tyres because of the sudden braking in the A bunch.

The route was very fast and enjoyable and the marhalling in our group was 100%.

I started in C4 and am very upset on what happened. I personally feel the race commissaries is in competent and blame him and also the persons who let the racing tandems start behind us - as already said what did they thinking of putting the AL with them sure they must have thought that they will caught us as the tandems obtain higher speed than a single bike. Back to the race commissaries - when he saw the racing tandems are going to caught us he should have drive up in front and ask us let the bunch pass and ride in front of us until the tandems and AL was in clear. I was one of the cyclists who immediately fall back and think it is just mercy from above that no cyclists were killed. Also big was my disappointment when we ride hard and sprint to the finished that the whole C4 is been disqualified!! Al my expenses for nothing (travelling, entry accommodation etc) (they told us that only the riders of C4 that went with the tandems will be disqualified). I hope in future they will look again into this category thing (C1- C4) as I think it is one of the stupidest ideas of CSA ever, how long before cyclist is going to be killed - because this big bunch riding is very, very unsafe on roads that are not close and traffic all over the show (At the Fast one Our bunch was also too big and it was very dangerous as well. I can't tell you how p... off I am at this stage. I seriously am considering to only ride mountain bike

Oh, and I'm sure the tandmes did help to increase the speed, but the conditions were almost perfect yesterday, the cat1's did a record time, and covered just over 50km's in the first hour, no tandems needed, and including 2xcrashes...

50k's an hour is insanely fast  . I would think that it would be dangerous at those speeds, specially if your hugging someones back wheels. Well done to you guys for finishing in one piece.
