Garmin has finally started working on an update of GTC. It is still in public beta, so those who want to can test it out...

I cannot see much that has changed, and will stick to SportTracks 3.

Here are the links on the Garmin forums:

(GTC 3.6.0.5 beta)

(GTC 3.6.0.6 beta)

Change list GTC 3.6.0.5 beta

  • GTC no longer uses legacy "bin files" as its data storage format, and is now using a more reliable open-source embedded database. Note: GTC no longer stores its application data in the "All Users Program Data Path", but is now in the current user's app data path
    "C:\Users\<WindowsLogin>\AppData\Roaming\GARMIN\Tra iningCenter\UserData" in Windows Vista/7
  • GTC has been re-engineered to scale better for larger user data sets.
  • GTC provides the ability to convert existing legacy user bin file accounts. A user can automatically migrate old users to new user accounts on a 1-1 basis or merge multiple legacy accounts into a single new user file. This feature was designed to be robust so that it will attempt to recover any valid legacy data even from "corrupted bin files" that were not accessible from GTC 3.5.3 and earlier.
  • GTC now supports Power workout creation/editing
  • GTC now supports Repeat Step targets other than step count in support of newer devices that provide this feature(Repeat Until).
  • GTC now supports Power Zones and Bikes in the User Profile
  • GTC now supports auto-error reporting like more current Garmin Windows applications
  • GTC can now properly sync user profile with FIT mass storage devices such as the Edge 500/800 & Forerunner 110/210.
  • GTC no longer has a rigid folder structure where top level folders force a sport type on the folder's sub-elements. User's can create sub-folders and mix elements in any manner they desire regardless of the sport type of the activity or workout. The only provided "System Folders" are "My <User Data Type>" and "Imported <User Data Type>" where <User Data Type> is Activities, Workouts, or Courses, and a folder with the default "Example Workouts".
  • GTC will allow the user to directly import Activity Fit Files from the Import->History menu.
  • GTC provides the user with the ability to change the sport type on activities and workouts since this can no longer be accomplished by moving an activity between Sport specific folders.
  • While GTC will not bring in multiple copies of the same activity to "My Activities" when doing a receive from device, the application also no longer requires that activities have a unique start time. Thus, a user may have an activity that was imported from a TCX file in "Imported Activities" that duplicates an activity brought over from the device in "My Activities".

Change list 3.6.0.6 beta:

  • GTC again generates aggregate average & max statistics for all folder and week elements.
  • GTC provides the ability to explicitly set the first day of the week. This setting changes all calendar related elements including activity week grouping and the Activity/Workout Calendars.
  • "Imported <Data Type>" folders and "Example Workout" folder are now deletable.
  • GTC now also allows users to directly import Workout and Course fit files from the File->Import menu in addition to Activities.
  • Fixed an issue that could cause the distance of the graph to be different from the distance shown in the totals with certain user data.
  • Fixed an issue where we would fail trying to generate a graph for certain user data that lacked distance in the trackpoints.
  • Fixed issue where GTC would generate bogus tick marks on the graph for certain user data.
  • Fixed issue where week notes would not import properly from TCX files.
  • Fixed performance problem when switching users on the AddDevice dialog.
  • Fixed various activity import issues.
  • Changed GTC to more gracefully handle certain bad fit files generated by the current public firmware for the Edge 800.
  • Fixed issue where GTC would fail to import certain FIT files that had manufacturer ids above a certain range.

2 known issues in this beta today ( 02-08-2011).

1) Lap graphs versus distance do not work properly. This is a problem computing the series for the graph and does not indicate a problem with user data.

2) Time in zones is not populated for Laps.

I'd wish they'd sort out the Ant Agent upload with the Garmin 310XT under Virtual Box for Linux.

Looks like I'm going to have to try out OSX86 on my laptop as I have an acute aversion to Bill.

Seeing that we are talking Garmin, is it possible to map a route and put in split times for the route without actually having to ride it? PM me if anyone knows, thanks.

Will give the software a try :D

SportTracks 3. Click on any routepoint on the map, and you get time/distance to that point.

SportTracks 3. Highlight a section on the graph, it gets highlighted on the map, and averages and durations/distance (based on x axis) is shown on the chart

Is this for before you have even done the route? Was looking at mapping Argus route and putting in split times for certain points - to make sure I am on track.

Not to my knowledge.

www.Endomondo.com is quite fun with use of your garmin. Can link friends to compare workouts, nice graphic representations incl maps, and you can do realtime tracking off GPS cellphones.

It will be nice if Garmin can give us presentations and talks how to use garmins. Polar does it every year..... I still struggles with garmin

+1 - I have had to look at their FAQ section and google for answers about certain things. Their user manual and owners manual are useless!

Map my ride won't let me go onto the freeway (Eastern Boulevard if I remember correctly) - this'll be all the way to the end of the M3 (Blueroute)...... looked at GTC for similar times and no one came in at around 3:10 - most are late 3hr and onwards.
