EF Education First / Rapha announces partial off-beat calendar

EF announced last summer that it will send its pro riders to events and races that fall outside the typical WorldTour team’s purview, and a few of those events were announced Tuesday:

— Dirty Kanza, the 200-mile gravel race across Kansas.

— Leadville Trail 100, a 100-mile mountain bike race from Leadville, Colorado, which sits at 10,000 feet (3,400m) above sea level.

— Three Peaks, the over-hill-and-dale cyclocross event in the UK.

— Taiwan KOM, which climbs Wuling pass in Taiwan from sea level to over 3,300m.

Vaighters, on the race dynamics of the modern day peloton during the early season:

“That wild racing you see early in the year is a product of this dynamic. Everyone comes into the season in very good shape these days. No more bellies and slow speeds. We see higher power values and higher tension in March than we do for the entire season. Forget about your preconceptions of a rider easing his way into the year, that **** doesn’t happen anymore. If you don’t come in fit and ready, the races are so fast and hard, they kill you rather than train you.”

Truthfully I was underwhelmed by that new kit. Rapha have the ability, resource and knowledge to carve something slightly better. Is you look at the Canyon SRAM kit that was a pretty unique move while this feels like the reasons it is what is is bigger the actual finished product. All the 'disrupter' talk would have gone down singing hymns in the boardroom presentation but in reality it's a pink kit that someone spilt some blue on that doesn't match the colour of the shorts.

You look about at the plethora of smaller kit makers that have great designs that are not to 'out there' that you could integrate the key sponsors requirements into and you have to think that Rapha have become a bit to corporate and a bit too bloated.

I'm inclined to agree. Was expecting something really unique and stylish. This is unique I suppose and maybe I'm just to out of style to know if it's stylish, but for me personally this kit is just meh.

I realise that Cannondale are no longer a title sponsor, but I really liked the pink and green from last season. Would've been cool if they incorporated the green again.

Also not too keen on the bike's paint job. Looks a bit slapped together. I'm all for the retro look, Ridley pulled if off extremely well a couple of seasons ago, but this looks a bit like an afterthought.

Just like porn, the reality is slightly different.
