That's the Cav crash in the Tour de Suisse, right? I seem to remember about 20-odd rider going down, like Big Tom, who's about two wheels back, and Haussler, Ciolek and Petacchi.

Next question.... What on earth do you do in a situation like that???

Do you simply hold your line and crash, or try to avoid it, taking out the rider next to you?? The Sky rider next to Boonen should be able to make it out of there with a sharp right turn, but might be taking out riders on his rear right then??

 

Also, was the pure rim failure or was that a clip and ride on by the Polka Dot Jersey?

Cav was at fault in that crash.

He veered in front of the rider (whose wheel is crossing his) at high speed.

Not holding his racing line.

 

I think Heinrich Haussler was severely injured as a big victim of that crash...

At those speeds you don't stand much chance of getting out of it. Often those crashes spread right across the road, and some are lucky enough to brake in them.
