Anyone traveled out SA with a bike and declared it at customs when leaving? What was the process and how much detail did they capture about the bike?

Cheers,

Sam

I have never delared mine as the customns fellas are never about when I fly (around midnight) But each time there has been no problem walking back through customns with it.

You can carry personal sports equipment back.

I fold it up small, wheels, discs, saddle, cranks, forks, and derailler come off, all tied eogether with a zillion cable ties and a bit of foam, with a rope handle.

It ends up looking a bit like a folded wheel chair

Its easy enough to declare when leaving at the customs counter, about 5 mins if no queue, and you should put the serial number. Things can go wrong when you come back in and you don't have that form, even if the goods look second hand, they can be very difficult and u will k@k & betaal. It does happen, promise! No amount of reasoning will prevail.

Serial of what? The frame?

Outbound you dont need an invoice. As you intend bringing the same bike back then give them as much info as you have - a serial number would be a good start. The more info they have outbound, the less issues you could potentially encounter inbound.

I didn't declare mine the one time I took it out the country. Didn't even think about it.

Got nervous when the customs officials stopped me coming back in. Just told them I didn't know and that the airline didn't tell me it had to be done. They must've been in a good mood because they let me go but gave me a stern warning.

Always do and don't lose the completed form the custom guys give you rolleyes.gifrolleyes.gif

Same applies for all electronic goodies. laptops cell phones and cameras..thumbup1.gif

Funny, I have never declared when leaving and travel overseas normally twice a year. Some people swear by it and some people swear not to. I just never really thought about it. Guess its different if you were coming back with 2 boxed xbox 360's in your bag!

Lag - sounds like you just confuse them (which isn't difficult to do)
