  1. This is conflicting information from what I got from them, having also e-mailed them. Here is a cut-and-paste of their reply: Good day Entries are now closed. You will have to go and do a late entry at the Race Number Collection at Sandton Convention Centre, 17thand 18th of November 2011, from 10h00 – 18h00. 19th of November 2011 from 09h00 –14h00. The late entry fee is R 350.00 per entry. There is no way that I am going to pay an additional R350 over and above the money I paid for my colleague's entry. Maybe I should just phone them and try to speak to human being.
  2. I did not enter for this year’s race because I would have been in Doha, Qatar from now until the end of the month for work purposes. The project for which I would have been sent to assist with, has however been postponed to next year. I have now been offered a race entry by one of my work colleagues who will not be able to take part anymore. I would like to find out if there is a possibility to do a late substitution at the Cycle challenge expo at the Sandton Convention Centre? If this is a possibility, what would the procedure be, and also, what would the cost involved be? Does anyone have first-hand knowledge regarding this, because I am getting very conflicting information from different colleagues, but all of them starts their sentences with 'I have heard....".

  4. Here is a very interesting article by DC Rainmaker on how the calorie measurement are done on Garmin Fitness devices: http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2010/11/how-calorie-measurement-works-on-garmin.html
  5.  I wanted to do that as well! Jokes aside, I have always found that Mr. Min/Pledge works better than deodorant. Deodorant evaporates too fast, but the Mr. Min/Pledge creates foam which slowly moistens the sticker and loosens the glue. Spray it on, wait for 10-15 minutes and wipe off with a soft cloth. When i read this thread I remembered that my bike also still had the Argus sticker on, and removed it using the method i described.
  6. Apparently Pinarello themselves. Look at the larger picture over here: http://www.pinarello.com/eng/fp4_514.php Don't worry, my other bike has Campy on it.
  7. Nice try, but .......... It's mine, all mine!!!!!!!! (Evil laugh fading into the background.....)
  8. I was well on my way for a sub 4 last year, but had to withdraw because of "gippo guts"! I will be trying hard for a sub 4, but at 48 it is becoming tougher.
  9. I have done it a few times under 4 hours, but since my knee operation about 3 years ago, I have not managed it again (yet). Hoping for the best this year. The last race I did was the 63km Dischem R4S, which I did in 1:48. I only did the short distance because later that evening I was flying out to the UK (Manchester) for business. I came back towards the end of February.
  10. I have had it for almost 2 weeks now, and have done about 250km's on it.
  11. Here is my new steed with which I will be attempting this years Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour. Hopefully I will do it in under 4 hours with it.
  12. Have you tried doing the installation in "Safe Mode"?
  13. Try this. First remove/uninstall the "Unknown device" in the device manager. Now download the USB drivers from the Garmin website: http://www8.garmin.com/software/USBDrivers_23.exe Now open the USBDrivers_23.exe with Winrar or Winzip and extract the files to a known location on the HDD. Navigate to the location where you extracted the files to and them browse to the "BIN" folder. Now, depending on whether you have a 64 bit or 32 bit oerating system, double click on either the USB_32.msi or USB_64.msi file and see if you manage to install the Garmin USB driver this way.
  14. I feel quite chuffed with myself. I am a roadie, and have only done road races since I started cycling September 2003. My first race was the 2003 94.7. I entered the race on the last day of online entries, which means I trained less than 2 months for my first race, which I eventually did in just under 4 hours. I have literally done hundreds of road races since then. Unfortunately I am still a kuk cyclist! I cannot get to under 3:15 for the 94.7. However, my new cycling buddy convinced me to enter for the 56km Crater Cruise, and I did a late entry on Friday afternoon. I have entered for a MTB race for which I have not cycled one single kilometer off-road! Must have been out of my mind. I started of slow with my buddy because I did not know how to pace myself on a MTB during a 56km off-road race. After about 15km I told my mate that I am going to push a little harder because I felt we were going too slow. I then left him behind and never saw him till the race finish. I only had two water bottles and no bicycle pump with me should I get a flat. I was relying on my mate for his pump should the need arrise. I completed the race, and even cycled up the "Sorry" koppie! Most people pushed their bikes up. A seasoned MTB'er at work said that the Crater Cruise wasn't a "real" MTB race, so I should not be too quick to pat myself on the back for having completed it. Well, stuff him! I feel proud on my first MTB race at the young age of almost 48! Not a magnificent time (03:50), but if I rode on my own, it would have been a lot quicker. Also according to the race result, almost 200 cyclists finished after me. And another thing, goeie flok! What was up with the wind and the heat!
  15. I have never done a MTB race, but I do have a Canondale F7 MTB. A friend of mine said that the 56km race is not too bad for a beginner and when I saw the advertisement in the latest (October) RIDE magazine, I decided to bite the bullet and went online to enter this event. However, when I go to the http://www.cratercruise.co.za website, I am getting this message: “Online Pre Entries for the 2010 Crater Cruise Cycling Festival are now Closed” Surely the advertisement in the magazine stated that the pre entries closes on the 30th of September? No mention was made of a time, so normally one would assume it to be at midnight. I immediately e-mailed the organizers to find out what the situation is. I got a response a little while later. This is where I fall of the bus. The ad in the magazine stated " pre entries closes 30 September 2010". Not having given any time, I have assumed this to be at midnight 30 September 2010. WRONG!!!! According to the organizers, the pre entries closed at midnight yesterday. Here is their response "ja op 0h00 van die 29ste, m.a.w die 30st is die inskrywings gesluit!" If that is the case, why did they not state it more clearly, or is is just me that is a bit doff?
  16. The reason I am asking is that heart diseases are an hereditary family problem My father had bypass surgery at 44, and died about 10 days later. My eldest brother died of a heart attack when he was 33 and my younger brother had triple bypass surgery at 32 and eventually passed away a few months later. This was one of my main reasons for taking up cycling just after I turned 40 and I realised I was turning into a big couch potato. Now I am just big, but so far the longest living male member of our family. Maybe I should monitor my heart a litttle more closely.
  17. If I go according to the 220-age calculation my max heart rate should be 172. I just checked my last 20 odd races and training rides, and my avg heart rate is 160, which is 93% of max. My avg max heart rate for these last couple of rides/races were 184, which is about 7.5% above my max heart rate. Should I be concerned about this 7.5% above max heart rate?
  18. Oops! I posted this at work, and Websense prevented me from reading through the whole thread.

  22. I know what your 1% trade secret is! For all those waiting in anticipation, the other 1% is as follows: Argon (Ar)=0.9340% Carbon dioxide (CO2)=0.039% Neon (Ne)=0.001818% Helium (He)=0.000524% Methane (CH4)=0.000179% Krypton (Kr)=0.000114% Hydrogen (H2)=0.000055% Nitrous oxide (N2O)=0.00003% Carbon monoxide (CO)=0.00001% Xenon (Xe)=9 × 10−6%
  23. Yesterday I friend of mine asked me to go out with him early this morning so that he can get back in the saddle. He did not do any cycling the past 3-4 months. He warned me in advance that we would have to take it slow, him being very unfit. We did a 50km ride, with an slow average of 25Km/h. I must say that this was one of my most enjoyable rides that I have had in a long time! We chatted the whole time, and I was quite dissapointed when it was over. He was just as excited being back in the saddle again.
  24. Omnico has just proved them tops in customer service, and this was not the first time. I have a Ryder 9 function cycling computer that has worked perfectly until recently. It has been in almost daily use for about 20 months on my work commuting MTB. The unit did not pick up the magnet anymore. I contacted the guys at Omnico, and a day or two later they came back to me and said that I have to go to my LBS and go and collect a brand new one which was left for me there! No questions asked, not quible, no trying to hide behind fine print, nothing! Thanks Omnico!
