  1. My son is riding with my old Raleigh RC4500. Red, yellow and black. He did not do as good as last year (He came in at 7th last year with a time of 1:24), but he currently is focusing more on the Sasol marathon in Sasolburg which is this Saturday, the 3rd of February. Thereafter he will concentrate once again on cycling, and he is hoping for a PB on the CTCT.
  2. I also did the shorter route with my son, which kicked my ass! He came in at no 37. But I am satisfied with my results. I rode almost the same time as last year (±1.46), but improved my overall position from 111 to 93, slightly worse in my start group position (from 17 down to 21) but again improved in my age group of 50-59 down from 28 to 17.
  3. I reported for duty at the said Seventh South African Infantry Battalion on the 10th of July 1981, went to the Infantry School at Oudtshoorn (Echo Company, Capt Ackerman), and then chose 7SAI again to finish my second year as a 2nd lieutenant and platoon commander at Delta Company under the leadership of company commander Capt Lieb Bester (Actor and musician). Finished my 2 years at 7SAI on the 23rd of June 1983. I had some really good (but also very tough!) times in my 2 years national service, and I was glad that I did it.
  4. Ha Ha! Maybe it was the unlucky number 13! Thanks for the well wishes, but fortunately I am ok. Muscles still sore this morning and I have decided to take a day off from work to recover properly. After all, I have 90 days of accumulated sick leave available.....
  5. I had an absolutely horrible race. Right from the start I felt as if I did not have any strength, I also just could not find my rythm. And I have never cramped so much ever since i started cycling in 2001! I had to stop to be massaged at the water point at about 80km. The young lady could not believe how much my muscles cramped! Stopping there to be massaged actually turned out to be a good thing, becuase I then rode to the finish without any further cramps and I never felt the need to get off and push the bike. At the end I sat down to drink the cold Coke, and complettely passed out when I wanted to get up! I just saw stars and went down like a log. I woke up to a lot of concerened faces hovering over me. asking if I'm ok. My bike fell over onto the tar and my cellphone fell onto the pavement. I had to sit there for quite a while before I could get up to walk to my son's car. My back muscles then went into spasms and I got cold fever while we were driving back to Sasolburg. At home I immediately took a warm bath to get rid of the shaking from the cold fever. But, 947 no 13 is now done and dusted even though it was in a terrible time of 05:12! This morning my legs are still very stiff ond sore from the cramping, and I'll just take it slow today. Congrats to all that achieved their time targets and got their PBs!
  6. It will work.I have the same one, been using it since 2001 when I started cycling and tested it again at the 947CC expo and it was working. He just need to ensure that it's linked to his name at Racetec.
  7. This is exactly why I stopped riding this race. I cannot drive from Sasolburg to JHB for number collection and then again the next day. about 3-4 years ago I have e-mailed the organisers numerous times to find out if I can collect my number the morning of the race, but I was completely ignored. With that attitude I have since then never entered an ASG organised race again, and will not enter one until they have an morning collection option for us "out of towners".
  8. I was lucky enough to win an entry for the CC_2017 through a competition from one of the event sponsors, The AA. Thanks a lot to them! Just completed my entry process and it was awesome to see the message that the entry has been paid for by the voucher code, and my checkout basket was 0.00. After I entered I saw: Entries to date: 22140
  9. I still have a Garmin Edge 705, still going strong! My Garmin connect account and Strava account is linked, so the moment I upload my ride to Garmin Connect, it's also automatically loaded to Strava.
  10. I had a DNF about 5 years ago in the Argus. I must have had something dodgy to eat after I arrived in CT 2 days before the race. I had severe diarrhoea that dehydrated me tremendously. The Sunday morning of the race I felt better and started the race in my group, but soon into the race I discovered that was a huge mistake! I just did not have any strength in my legs, and went to the medical station at Simonstown where they gave me some Rehidrat. Even after they advised me not to continue, I went ahead, but at the next medical station before Smutswinkel I just could not carry on anymore and withdrew. Deciding to start that morning was a very big mistake and huge risk that I would advise anyone against doing what I have done. Thereafter I was even sicker than what I have been prior to the race.
  11. Have you tried both Wadee's Cycles and Saleys cycles at the Indian Plaza in Vereeniging? I purchashed my Buzz Rack Buzz Runner Spark 3 at Wadee's and it was over R2500 cheaper than any other place I could find. And not forgetting Christo or Harry at Metro Cycles in Vanderbijlpark. I have always had excellent service and prices from them.
  12. I actually chuckled a bit when Alberto Contador came in, and the commentator said "El Pistolero is firing blanks........"
  13. Damn! What\s the distance now? And what's been cut out?
  14. Is anyone having any luck with the live streaming? I'm not hetting anything! http://www.capetowncycletour.tv/
  15. My personal opinion is that is a bit late. Things tend get very hectic at the starting chute, so I always try to get there at least 2 hours before my start.
  16. Sounds like a fun challenge, but I'll probably forget to start the app most rides. I have however been commuting to work and back almost every work day for the last 30 odd years. Unfortunately it's only a ±10 km daily trip, so I will not accrue a lot per week/month. Good luck to all taking up this challenge!
  17. Quite soon into the race I joked to the others in our bunch that it seems that we should do this race on a MTB next year! The amount of potholes we encountered was ridiculous, and I think where they had one young lady standing INSIDE the pothole waving a flag to warn the cyclists about it was extremely dangerous! Just one cyclist looking down for a moment would have been disasterous. On the other hand, I am quite proud of my eldest son. He also rode the 50km race (AS starting bunch) with my almost 10 year old Raleigh RC3500 which I passed on to him, and he came 7th overall, and 2nd in his age position! Kudos to him. And not even with real cycling shoes, just takkies and pedals with straps.....
  18. I rode the 40km distance of the Century Electrical road race in Vanderbijlpark this morning. And as always, an awesome, well organised race! After most of the 80km riders finished, the prize giving and lucky draw started. There also were two distances for the youngesters which was a 4km race and a 500m event for the kiddies on their kick scooters assisted by their parents. According to me, the biggest winner of the day came from one of the young boys which took part in the 4km distance race. The winner was anounced, but honorable mention was made of the kid that came in the 4th place. He was leading the race, but the cyclist which was in second position at the time fell, and the boy leading the race stopped, walked back to help the one that has fallen up and back on his bike, and on his way again. Because of his act of unshelfishness, he unfortunately only managed to get 4th place. But, in my eyes and I suppose all of the people at the prize giving, he was the biggest winner of the day! He has done himself and his parents proud.
  19. Not to mention that they are actually breaking the law. Here is an informative piece on the Arrivealive website explaining it all. https://www.arrivealive.co.za/Compulsory-Helmets Here is a short snippet taken from the article "In October 2004, regulation 207(2) of the National Road Traffic Regulation became effective after being passed three years earlier. The regulation orders the compulsory wearing of a protective helmet that is properly fastened and fitted while riding a bicycle or being carried as a passenger." I even wear an helmet when I commute to work every day! There is absolutely no reason not to wear it.
  20. What an absolutely amazing feat! That's an average of 142.53km per day that this remarkable woman cycled each day. http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-england-nottinghamshire-38131533 http://www.ayearinthesaddle.com/
  21. I do not know how usefull these are, but I bookmarked it some time ago just in case I needed it one day. Maybe you will find it usefull? https://openmtbmap.org/
  22. The last couple of times it cost me on average about R10K per trip down to Cape Town to take part. This year I did not go down because of salary freezes and will unfortunately not go down next year again. Maybe things will pick up and take part 2018 again.
  23. I wonder if my son perhaps got anything worthwhile on camera at the finish line that could assist in resolving or addressing this concern. He works for the company Mardo Photos and he was there to do the "photo finish". I wasn't there at the finish, so I am not sure how many cameras were set up, and what angles he recorded. If needed, I can ask him to have a look.
  24. One of the best, if not THE best organised race on the calender! Deffinitely my favourite race here up north. Pity I cannot make it after the good news it has been moved to this time of the year. Will try my best to do it next year. My son will be there, but in a non-cycling capacity. He is one of the photographers doing the photo-finish.
